Yoshinofuji spoke to reporters yesterday after morning keiko at the
Adastria Mito Arena in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, revealing that his
family home in Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, which was hit by the 2026
Kumamoto Earthquake, was deemed completely destroyed. He said that on the
25th, he underwent an investigation by the insurance company and "received
a call from my family saying that the steel frame was damaged and it was a
total loss." Yoshinofuji had returned home after the Nagoya tournament and
was out when the earthquake struck. His family home had windows that had
fallen off, doors that wouldn't close, and a broken toilet. The electricity
and water remained shut off until he rejoined the summer jungyo on the 2nd
of this month. Upon receiving the total destruction ruling, he said with a
somber expression, "I think they'll tear it down and rebuild it." The 28th
will mark one month since the earthquake. "It's been a long time. I've been
constantly worried about the situation there," he said, thinking of his
hometown. He had a record of 6 wins and 9 losses in the last tournament.
Although it is highly likely that he will be demoted from Sanyaku in Aki,
he showed his fighting spirit by saying, "The next Basho after that is the
Kyushu Basho. I think it would be best if I could return to Sanyaku..."
