Houshouryuu plans to join the Autumn Jungyo starting October 10 and aims to
make his comeback at the Kyushu Basho (starting on November 8th at the
Fukuoka Kokusai Center). His Oyakata Tatsunami stated that the final
decision on his participation in the next tournament would be made after
arriving in Kyushu. He added, "He won't be ready in time unless he trains
intensely during the jungyo. He has a bit of a tendency to go easy on
himself, so I’m going to speak sternly to him before the tour begins,"
indicating a plan to ensure he prepares seriously. While Houshouryuu faces
focus from both within and outside the sumo world, his Oyakata notes that
words of warm encouragement have also reached him. However, he has no
intention of taking the kind voices of those who continue to wait for his
return for granted. Tatsunami Oyakata stated firmly, "But he needs to start
delivering results soon. Even though injuries are the cause, he can't keep
using that as an excuse. He understands that himself." Both master and
disciple are determined to secure wins upon his return. Of course,
Tatsunami Oyakata has unwavering faith that his prized pupil will make a
comeback. "Becoming a Yokozuna is a magnificent achievement; after all,
there are those who never reach that rank. You never know until the bout
actually takes place, but I believe he’ll get the job done. He certainly
has the ability," he said with conviction.
On the 28th, Ryuuden, hailing from Kofu City currently ranked at Juryo 8,
paid a courtesy call on Yamanashi Governor Kotaro Nagasaki at the
prefectural government office. He had achieved a kachikoshi of 9 wins and 6
losses at the Aki Basho, which concluded on the 27th. When Governor
Nagasaki welcomed him by saying, "Congratulations on your kachikoshi,"
Ryuuden expressed his aspirations: "My rank will rise to upper Juryo for
the Kyushu Tournament [in November], so I want to secure double-digit wins,
clinch a return to Makuuchi, and build momentum for next year." Reflecting
on the Autumn Tournament, the 35-year-old said, "I managed to beat quite a
few younger rikishi, which gave me a boost of energy. I feel like my best
days are still ahead of me." He also renewed his determination, noting,
"Tamawashi is aiming to return to Makuuchi at age 41. I need to work hard,
too." (Norikazu Miyake)
