On the 28th, the Yokozuna Deliberation Council held its regular meeting at
the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, where Chairman Tadamori Oshima (80), a
former Speaker of the House of Representatives, spoke to the press. He
addressed the situation of Yokozuna Houshouryuu, who has sat out three
consecutive bashos due to a right knee injury. The Autumn Tournament marked
his fifth absence during his ten-tournament tenure as Yokozuna; it was the
first time he had missed the opening day of a tournament since his
professional debut at the 2018 New Year Tournament. Oshima expressed his
hope, stating, "To fulfill his responsibilities as a Yokozuna, I want him
to heal his injury, build up his training, and prepare properly for the
tournament." Houshouryuu injured his right knee during the Nagoya Basho
and withdrew from competition starting on Day 14. After returning to Tokyo,
he underwent surgery on July 29 to repair a ligament. According to his
Oyakata Tatsunami , he had experienced symptoms such as a loss of appetite
and insomnia but has since resumed training. While noting that he did not
have a precise grasp of the injury's current status, the Chairman expressed
his wish: "When he steps onto the dohyo, I want him to display the kind of
sumo befitting a Yokozuna, in other words, I want him to return in a state
where he can contend for the yusho." Regarding the possibility of a formal
resolution such as an "encouragement" (a warning issued to underperforming
Yokozuna), he explained that the topic had not been discussed.
Regarding Oonosato- Chairman Tadamori Oshima praised Yokozuna Oonosato for
securing his first yusho in a year at the Aki Tournament, which concluded
the previous day. Although Oonosato had gone without a title since the Aki
Tournament of the previous year—partly due to a left shoulder injury—Oshima
remarked, "He endured hardships and worked hard over the past year, and in
this tournament, he truly fulfilled the responsibilities of a Yokozuna by
delivering a yusho." Regarding this sixth title, Oshima expressed his
hopes, saying, "I want him to strive further and aim to become a
one-of-a-kind Yokozuna who embodies both dignity and strength." At the same
time, noting that there had been a streak of six consecutive tournaments
starting with last year's Kyushu basho were won with a 12-3 record, Oshima
called for a higher level of performance, stating, "I want him to step up
as a Yokozuna who aims for a zensho yusho."
