Atamifuji lost to Fujinokawa, getting his fifth consecutive defeat in the
closing stages of the basho. At the tachiai, he allowed his opponent to
gain a morozashi. Unable to secure a hold on the mawashi himself, he
attempted to drive forward but was caught by a come-from-behind sukuinage.
Although he had previously posted records of 9 and 12 wins since debuting
at the Sekiwake rank in Natsu, he finished this tournament with only eight
wins. He fell four victories short of the 33-win benchmark across three
consecutive tournaments generally required for promotion to Ozeki.
Asakayama, the Director of the Judging Department, commented on the
prospect of continuing his Ozeki promotion bid next tournament, noting,
"It’s not as if there is absolutely no chance, but the situation is tough."
When asked if he needed to start over, Asakayama expressed hope for a
comeback, saying, "He should approach it with that kind of mindset."

Asakayama went on to discuss Aonishiki's possible tsunatori run. Aonishiki
finished the basho with an 11-4 record; although he missed out on the
yusho after losing to Yokozuna Oonosato, he had contended for the title and
finished just one win behind the winner. Would this performance—considered
"equivalent to a championship victory"—qualify as a Yokozuna promotion bid
for the next tournament? Asakayama remarked, "Eleven wins is a pretty tough
threshold. Even if it is considered 'equivalent' to a win, we have to
carefully evaluate both the content of the bouts and the overall record."
