It was revealed on the 27th that the Kyokai is planning a Grand Sumo koen
in Bangkok, Thailand, for next June. An official announcement is expected
once the plan is approved at the regular board meeting following the Autumn
Tournament. This will mark the third consecutive year of overseas
performances, following events in London in 2025 and Paris in 2026. It will
be the first overseas tour in Asia since the 2013 tour in Jakarta,
Indonesia, a gap of 14 years. As 2027 marks the 140th anniversary of
diplomatic relations between Japan and Thailand, the event will also serve
as a commemorative project. Following the success of the London event, the
Kyokai has received offers for performances from around the world. While
locations such as Los Angeles and Australia were also considered for next
year, plans were ultimately finalized for Bangkok. The event is likely to
take place during the second week of June, with the wrestlers scheduled to
travel to the site in two separate groups. In early October of this year, a
select group of rikishi plans to visit Bangkok to hold press conferences
and promote the upcoming event. Shouryuu (21, Otowayama beya), a
Sandanme rikishi who was raised in Thailand by a Thai mother, commented on
the local awareness of Ozumo, noting, "Everyone knows about it, but they
don't understand the meaning behind it." The Bangkok event is expected to
serve as a valuable opportunity to further popularize Ozumo.
