The Kyokai announced the list of rikishi who would be sitting out the
autumn jungyo, which begins on October 6. Attention has been drawn to the
fact that one specific rikishi was missing from that list. The jungyo will
take place from October 6 to 25, covering a region stretching from Kanto to
Chugoku. Prior to this, it was announced that 12 rikishi, including
Yokozuna Houshouryuu, would sit out (though Houshouryuu plans to join
midway), while four rikishi from Juryo would participate as replacements.
Fans took particular note of the fact that Nishikifuji, who finished the
recent Autumn Tournament with a 7-8 record at Maegashira 7W, was not
included in the list of rikishi sitting out. Nishikifuji had previously
missed the summer jungyo due to atrial fibrillation; it had been reported
that, to minimize the risk of the condition worsening, he planned to
undergo heart surgery following a brief hospitalization after Aki. Although
Nishikifuji is currently scheduled to participate in the autumn jungyo from
day one, concerned voices have emerged on social media. Comments include:
"Nishikifuji isn't on the list of rikishi sitting out - is he okay?";
"Didn't he say he was having surgery? Does this mean he isn't skipping the
jungyo?"; "Considering the delicate nature of the surgery, surely he
shouldn't push himself too hard?"; and "It would be fine to join midway
after assessing the situation, just like Houshouryuu." While the exact date
of Nishikifuji's surgery had not been reported as of October 1, it is
speculated that he might undergo the procedure sometime between September
28 and October 4, the break period between bashos, since waiting until
after the jungyo would significantly impact his preparation for the Kyushu
Tournament. There is also a strong possibility that the surgery has already
been completed and he is currently under observation; one can only hope for
a positive recovery.
