Takadagawa, the head of the Jungyo department, indicated on the 20th that
the schedule will be eased starting with next year's natsu jungyo. The
schedule has already been decided until next year's spring jungyo after
Haru Basho. Takadagawa stated the policy, saying, "We will reduce the
schedule starting from next year's summer. This is something that Chairman
Hakkaku has told us to do. We will reduce the number of days from 90
(yearly) to around 70 days." Along with reducing the number of tour days
per year, measures will also be taken to reduce travel. "To reduce the
physical burden, if it is a nearby location, we will have them stay in the
same place, and we will include two-day or three-day events. We will also
avoid making them travel unnecessarily," he explained. In recent years, the
popularity of sumo has increased, and the tour schedule has become too
packed, raising concerns about the increased burden on the rikishi.
Takadagawa, who was transferred from the judging department after this
year's Haru Basho, said, "When you go on jungyo these days, it is more
comfortable compared to the old days, but this is not the time to be saying
that," and will be exploring ways to make it more suitable for modern times.
