A lot of chatter concerning the decision of the musubi no ichiban. Kokonoe
Oyakata who was the head shinpan during the bout, spoke to the press later
and explained. "From where I was sitting, Houshouryuu's hand was not
visible. Nisho-san (Nishonoseki Oyakata) called the monoii, saying, 'The
Yokozuna's hand was quick to be down as well..' When I asked the video
room, I was told that his hand was indeed down quickly , but Hakunofuji was
also "flying" (code for dead body). When I asked, 'Is there a possibility
of a torinaoshi?' they said, 'A torinaoshi would be fine too.' Everyone
could see Hakunofuji's body was "flying". Even taking into account that
Houshouryuu's hand touched the ground 'quickly', Hakunofuji's body was 'not
there'. We thought a torinaoshi is probably the safest option, don't you
think?"
