Today Tatsunami Oyakata stated that Yokozuna Houshouryuu, who underwent
surgery on his right knee in late July, "has suffered a partial tear of the
medial collateral ligament. He hasn't even been able to do the basic shiko
exercise yet. He can't compete in such a half-ready state," suggesting that
his participation in the Aki Basho is unlikely. He made these remarks in
Mito City, where he was in charge of the jungyo. Houshouryuu has been a
Yokozuna for nine tournaments since his promotion to Yokozuna in the spring
tournament last year, but has yet to win a yusho as a Yokozuna. Recently,
he has withdrawn from two consecutive tournaments midway through. Tatsunami
Oyakata expressed his concern, saying, "If he doesn't compete in the
tournament when he's completely recovered, there will be calls for him to
retire. I've told him that if he doesn't compete next time and win the
yusho, things will be tough." The 27-year-old Houshouryuu has missed four
of his nine tournaments as a Yokozuna. He did not participate in this
summer jungyo from the first day, but he has been seen at  Tatsunami beya's
training grounds.

Fujiryouga  injured his right thumb during asageiko today. He was
challenged by Yokozuna Oonosato and lost all six bouts. At the end, he left
the dohyo showing signs of pain in his right thumb. He did not participate
in the afternoon bouts and headed to the hospital. Although his right thumb
was taped, he emphasized that he was "okay" and explained that he would "go
back to Tokyo and get checked out at the hospital." The tour continues
until the 30th, but regarding the future, he only said, "I would like to
rejoin the jungyo, but...I don't know yet." He had a record of 10 wins and
5 losses in the summer and Nagoya bashos. Looking ahead to Aki, he said, "I
hope I can adjust properly."
As for Oonosato himself, he went a 10-1 record against hiramaku rikishi in
asageiko. He took part in a total of 11 bouts under the watchful eyes of
his Oyakata, Nishonoseki. He won all 6 bouts against Fujiryouga and 4-1
against Gounoyama. "It was nice to practice in front of my Oyakata for the
first time in a while. I was using my left hand well. Not bad," he
reflected. He finished the Nagoya tournament with a record of 9 wins and 6
losses. Looking ahead to Aki basho , he said, "I want to do my best again
tomorrow. I want to be ready for the first day." Nishonoseki expressed his
expectations, saying, "I want him to take this jungyo seriously. I think
he'll get stronger and stronger." [Daiki Iioka]
