New Juryo Tokifudou (23, Tokitsukaze beya), trained on the 10th at his heya
in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, ahead of the Aki Basho. He had 17 practice bouts
against opponents including former Ozeki Shoudai and Tokihayate, who has
returned to Makuuchi. He demonstrated his presence with powerful pushing
attacks and by driving forward while securing a left uwate . After wrapping
up his serious pre-tournament keiko, he wiped away sweat and remarked, "I
think things are going smoothly." During the Tokitsukaze ichimon
rengo-keiko yesterday, he had the opportunity to train against Ozeki
Kirishima, who lent him his chest in butsugari for a while. After
repeatedly clashing with the Ozeki, he said, "I'm glad he was tough on me.
He gave me advice: 'Learn to push from a low position. Don't show anything
unsightly; carry yourself like a proper sekitori. I'm grateful for that."
He intends to turn the Ozeki's words into strength. On this day, he also
unveiled a traditional oil-paper umbrella (*bangasa*) bearing his shikona,
a gift from an acquaintance to celebrate his promotion to Juryo. "It makes
the reality [of becoming a *sekitori*] sink in, and I'm happy. It looks
cool," he said, clearly moved. He also received seven kesho-mawashi and is
full of determination, stating, "I absolutely cannot drop back down now. I
have to work hard so I can keep wearing these for the next 10, 15, or even
20 years." A former junior high school *yokozuna*, he secured the status of
Sekitori six years after first reaching the Makushita. Aiming for a
kachikoshi, he expressed his resolve: "I just need to show my true ability
and what I've worked on so far. I'm going to give it my all."
