Ozeki Aonishiki, winner of the Nagoya tournament, is heading into the
Autumn tournament without any keiko bouts against fellow Makuuchi rikishi.
On the 9th, he held an open morning keiko session at his heya in Koto Ward,
Tokyo. He went head to head with Sandanme-Agoura (from the celeb list..)
winning all 15 of their matches. He had only resumed doing sumo the
previous day due to a left-leg injury. He plans to head into the
tournament's opening day on the 13th without facing any other sekitori,
training instead with rikishi from Makushita and below. "I've done
everything I possibly could," he said. "I have no anxiety; I'll just have
to see how it goes once the tournament starts." He had faced other Makuuchi
rikishi only once before the Nagoya tournament as well. This time, too, he
decided on his approach after consulting with Ajigawa Oyakata. While some
rikishi actively visit other heyas for degeiko and rack up high bout
counts, he sticks to his own methods. "Everyone has a different way of
doing things," he noted, explaining that for him, "pushing myself too hard
doesn't really help; it throws off the way my body feels." His three
previous yushos were all secured with 12-3 records, requiring a playoff
match to decide the winner. "I aim for a perfect record every basho. I want
to clinch the title during the regular scheduled bouts. Since I've lost
three times in each, there's still room for me to grow," he said, setting
