On the 26th, the new banzuke for the Kyushu Basho was released. Churanoumi
(33, Kise beya) has been promoted to Sanyaku for the first time, Komusubi
East. He is the first rikishi from Okinawa Prefecture to reach Sanyaku.
Having taken 63 tournaments to reach this rank since his professional
debut, he holds the record for the slowest promotion to Sanyaku among
rikishi who came from the collegiate sumo circuit. Last basho, competing as
MW3, he finished with a 10–5 record. This included victories over two
Ozeki, Kotozakura and Kirishima, and a win on the final day against
Komusubi Daieishou, which brought his total to double-digit wins. By
meeting the condition of winning on the final day, he also earned his
second Outstanding Performance Prize , his first since the Spring
Tournament of 2013. He entered the professional sumo world from Nihon
University, making his debut in the Spring Tournament of 2016. He was
promoted to Juryo for the first time at the 2018 Nagoya Tournament, but a
5–10 record saw him drop back to Makushita after just one tournament. He
spent a period moving back and forth between Juryo and Makushita, including
another 5–10 finish during his return to Juryo at the 2019 Summer
Tournament. He finally reached Makuuchi at the 2023 Kyushu Tournament—five
years and four months after his initial promotion to Juryo. Making his
top-division debut at age 30, he secured a 9–6 kachikoshi. Since then, he
has maintained his place in the top division, reaching Sanyaku in his 19th
tournament there. Among rikishi with a collegiate sumo background, the
previous record for the slowest promotion to Sanyaku was held by Yoshikaze
(61 tournaments), followed by Ura (52) and Tobizaru (46); Churanoumi's
promotion took two tournaments longer than Yoshikaze’s. At 33 years and 5
months old, his promotion to Sanyaku marks the fourth-oldest such
achievement in the post-war era, trailing only Shionishiki (34 years, 9
months) and the duo of Tamanoumi and Kotoinazuma (both 33 years, 8 months).
He is the 20th rikishi from Nihon University to reach Sanyaku , the first
from Kise beya since Ura in the 2024 New Year tournament, and the first
Nihon University alumnus since Yoshinofuji in the 2026 Nagoya tournament.
