On the 6th, Komusubi Wakatakakage had 11 bouts against both Ozeki Kirishima
and Aonishiki as well as Fujinokawa, winning 6 and losing 5. Although he
had a kachikoshi last basho, he withdrew from the 14th day due to "right
elbow pain." He also missed the entire Spring Jungyo, focusing on training
and treatment. He resumed facing sekitori a few days ago and is picking up
the pace of his training. He showed off his agility against Fujinokawa by
using his left hand to push him out. "I had good keiko today. The
tournament is coming up soon, so I'll just do what I can," he said,
expressing his confidence. Facing Aonishiki, he impressed everyone by
taking an even lower stance than his opponent and pushing him out,
suggesting he is close to a full recovery. "I'm grateful that the Ozeki
came to see me (just before the tournament). I am aiming to be ready for
the first day," he said with a satisfied expression.
Maegashira 1W Takanoshou went for degeiko to Sadogatake beya in Matsudo
City, Chiba Prefecture on the 6th, having 11 bouts. He won 5 of his bouts
against Ozeki Kotozakura and Sekiwake Kotoshouhou (both from Sadogatake),
demonstrating that he not only can use sharp pushes but also showed good
inashi to win by okuridashi. "I wish I could have put up a better fight
against the Ozeki. But I was conscious of many things," he said, reflecting
on his inability to defeat Kotozakura, but it seems he gained valuable
experience from the session. Yesterday at Minatogawa, he faced Fujinokawa
, who came for degeiko, and on the 4th, he faced Yokozuna Houshouryuu and
others at Shikoroyama beya. He aims to return to the sanyaku ranks from the
top of Maegashira with a kachikoshi.
Maegashira 9E Abi went for degeiko at Sadogatake beya, still in Matsudo
City, Chiba Prefecture on the 6th. He took part in a total of 10 bouts with
Ozeki Kotozakura and others, pushing forward while lifting his opponents
with sharp pushes. He also won 5 bouts, including one where he nimbly
pushed his opponents down at the edge of the dohyo via tsukidashi. "I might
not face them during the basho (because my rank has dropped), but I had a
good training session," he nodded. On the 4th, he also trained with
Yokozuna Houshouryuu and Ozeki Kirishima who came for degeiko to his heya.
"They even let me face them. I want to do my best to win big and be able to
face the top-ranked wrestlers," he said enthusiastically. He missed parts
of the last basho due to injury, finishing with a record of 4 wins, 6
losses, and 5 absences, dropping down the banzuke by 4 ranks. The former
yusho winner is making steady progress for a comeback.
