The Tokitsukaze Ichimon joint keiko session was held at the Kokugikan's
small dohyo. Ozeki Aonishiki who will face his first ever kadoban basho in
Natsu participated, even though he is not affiliated with the Ichimon. He
had eight bouts against Komusubi Wakatakakage and Wakamotoharu, winning
five and losing three. While there were some bouts where he pushed his
opponents out of the ring, there were also many instances where he was
forced out of the ring. He appeared to be out of breath, and reflected on
the training, saying, "I'm in normal condition. Both my good and bad points
came out." Concerns remain about the condition of his left little toe,
which he injured at the Spring Tournament in March and was found to be
fractured during the Spring Jungyo but he said, "It's not perfect, but it's
better than before." At the YDC soken held on the 1st he had nine bouts
against Yokozuna Houshouryuu and others, winning three. Since then, he has
continued training with younger rikishi at his heya, but going forward, he
plans to adjust his training by going for degeiko while checking his
physical condition. He emphasized that he has no choice but to "keep
improving my condition" in preparation for Natsu Basho.

Ozeki Kirishima who is aiming for his second consecutive championship at
the Natsu basho was there as well.. In practice bouts, he had 17 bouts
against Makuuchi rikishi Daieishou and Fujinokawa, winning 15 and losing 2.
There were bouts where he pushed his opponents out in one swift move after
a sharp tachiai, and also moments where he recovered even when pushed to
the edge of the dohyo. His bout with Fujinokawa was particularly intense,
and he said he felt good about it, saying, "My body moved well even against
an opponent with fast movements. I got out of breath midway through, but I
was able to train well until the end." Fujinokawa, who trained with him,
also commented that he was "very strong." His Oyakata Otowayama (former
Yokozuna Kakuryuu), who was watching the training, also felt that he had
made progress. He said that his training so far has been "going
smoothly." Regarding
having 17 bouts, he said, "It seems like not many people do that many, but
that's normal for me, and I think that's just who Kirishima is." With five
days until the start of the Natsu basho, Kirishima, who plans to check his
physical condition and adjust his training through degeiko from tomorrow,
the 6th, onwards, expressed his determination, saying, "If I train hard,
things will improve. I want to believe in that and continue training day by
day." [Ryotaro Yamada]
