Ozeki Aonishiki attended a party celebrating his promotion to Ozeki at
Hotel New Otani Tokyo on the 7th, vowing to make a comeback at the Nagoya
Basho. In the March basho, he injured his left little toe while competing
for promotion to Yokozuna, resulting in his first-ever makekoshi.
Furthermore, he injured his left ankle during training before Natsu basho,
forcing him to miss the entire tournament and he is now kadoban..
Nevertheless, in his speech at the party, he looked ahead, saying,
"Although I experienced some frustrating moments, I was able to gain
various experiences, and through that time, I have come to love sumo even
more." He expressed his gratitude to his Oyakata Ajigawa his wife, his
supporters' association, and his fans for their support, and declared ,
"From now on, I will aim for the top and work hard to become a rikishi that
people can look up to." Using adversity as fuel, he made his determination
to make a comeback with the blessings of many. Approximately 1,100 people
attended the event, including Yokozunae Houshouryuu, Oonosato, former
Yokozuna Wakanohana, and Tadahiro Nomura, who won gold medals in men's judo
at three consecutive Olympic Games. He also delivered a heartfelt message
to the younger generation in his home country of Ukraine. Before the party,
he spoke to reporters, including those from overseas media, emphasizing,
"Recently, the number of children taking up sumo in Ukraine has been
increasing. I want to tell children who are involved in sports, not just
sumo, that the most important thing is not to give up." He added, "Even if
you go through difficult times, if you overcome them, good things will
happen on the other side," offering encouragement as if drawing on his own
journey. At the party, he sang the national anthem with about 60 Ukrainians
who had gathered at the venue. The 22-year-old, who rose to the rank of
Ozeki in a foreign land, also showed his feelings for his home country.
