41 years young Tamawashi trained at his heya in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, on the
5th. The ironman is certain to be demoted to Juryo at the Nagoya basho but
he is burning with fighting spirit to return to Makuuchi, saying, "I want
to practice hard with a positive attitude again and do my best with the
feeling that I want to return in one tournament." Last tournament, which
was his 100th tournament in Makuuchi, he struggled as West Maegashira 13,
suffering nine consecutive losses from the first day and finishing with a
record of 2 wins and 13 losses. He seemed to be affected by that right calf
injury he sustained the day before the first day, but he did not mention
the injury during the basho. Today, he revealed, "It would be a lie to say
that it didn't hurt, so of course it hurt," but added, "It got much better
around the first half of the basho. From there, it was due to the weakness
of my sumo. It really wasn't because of my leg, it was my own weakness."
Although he suffered a significant number of losses resulting in a
disappointing outcome, he expressed gratitude for the warm applause and
cheers that filled the arena every day, which he said supported him. After
the basho, he rested and took a break, and started training again on the
3rd of this month. Today, he worked up a sweat with shiko, suriashi, and
basic exercises. Regarding the injured area, he said, "It's much better.
I'm more scared than in pain, so I want to forget about it as I go and
gradually get back into my own form," indicating his intention to gradually
increase the load. He also has a Koen in Paris on the 13th and 14th of this
month. "I'm looking forward to that too. Paris has a lot of dishes that use
butter. I love butter, so I want to go to a Michelin-starred restaurant and
try them," the 41-year-old said with a smile. He holds the third-highest
record for consecutive appearances in Makuuchi (1152 times), and if he
steps onto the Juryo dohyo in the next basho, it will be his first time in
13 years since Natsu of 2013, but he said, "I don't think it will be easy.
I want to stay calm and composed and do my best. It's a challenge," he
said, flexing his arms. (Naofumi Hayashi)

The front office for Nagoya Basho opened on the 5th at the venue, IG Arena
(Kita-ku, Nagoya). Oitekaze Oyakata, who has been newly appointed as the
head of the Nagoya basho, stated his aspirations, saying, "There's so much
I don't know, but I'll ask the other Oyakata anything and do my best."
Originally from Ishikawa Prefecture, he considers Nagoya a "near-local"
destination. He also has a connection to Nagoya, as he watched sumo for the
first time there. In the May Basho, two Yokozuna and two Ozeki were absent.
Oitekaze Oyakata expressed his hopes, saying, "Even if the Yokozuna are not
feeling well, they have no choice but to do their best. If the top-ranked
rikishi can properly fend off the younger ones, it will be a good
tournament." This is the second year the tournament has been held at IG
Arena, and the seating capacity has been increased by approximately 300
seats from last year to approximately 8,100. The merchandise space in the
sub-arena has also been expanded, creating a more fulfilling space to
welcome spectators.
