There is a rikishi who has been entering bashos midway for over three
years. Sadanojou <http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=6009> (21,
Sakaigawa beya), ranked  Jonidan 90W, has been competing midway through 19
consecutive tournaments. Judging from his records, he is not competing to
avoid being dropped out of the banzuke. He has even had tournaments where
he has achieved a kachikoshi  after starting midway . What is the reason
for this?

His Oyakata, Sakaigawa Oyakata explains: "He has a neck injury. Every
tournament, we let him rest for two or three bouts before considering his
participation. We are giving him treatment, so eventually I want him to be
able to compete in seven bouts. I am also worried about him." He consults
with doctors and Sadanojou's father, and makes decisions about his
participation while considering the strain on his body. Sadanojou joined
Sakaigawa beya at the age of 15 because his father, Yoshihiro Yamaguchi,
and Sakaigawa Oyakata were classmates at Isahaya Agricultural High School
in Nagasaki. Sadanojou himself does not talk about his injury. Therefore,
he is aware that "many people probably find it strange." Sumo fans
sometimes ask him why he keeps coming back to the dohyo midway through a
tournament. He's dealing with an injury, but he's full of motivation.
Sakaigawa is positive about his attitude in keiko, saying, "He works out a
lot at the heya and sweats a lot. I think he does a lot of teppo too."

Sadanojou says, "I have no intention of quitting. Even if I enter midway
through a tournament, I'll aim for a kachikoshi. My Oyakata is always
looking out for me." His mother is against it, but his father has
encouraged him to continue as a rikishi, saying, "If you don't want to have
any regrets, then do it." Starting at the the Nagoya basho three years ago,
he had only competed in one match for seven straight bashos.. In Aki of
2024, he competed in two matches, then three matches from the Kyushu
tournament of the same year, four matches from the Nagoya tournament last
year, and five matches from the January tournament this year. This basho,
he came back to the dohyo after missing two matches, and won on the 10th
day, putting him at 2 wins, 1 loss, and 2 absences. He has two matches
left, and if he wins both, he will have a kachikoshi. He is slowly but
surely making progress towards his goal of reaching Sandanme. [Ichiro
