593 rikishi. This is an increase of 5 from the Nagoya basho, but marks the
sixth consecutive tournament with fewer than 600 rikishi. The record is 943
in the 1994 Natsu basho, boosted by the "Waka-Taka boom." The declining
birthrate and decreasing participation in the sport have contributed to the
ongoing decline in the number of rikishi. By heya, Isegahama has the most
with 32, followed by Sakaigawa with 25, Tamanoi with 24, and Nishonoseki
and Takasago with 23 each. Isegahama  has the most sekitori (6 in Makuuchi
and 3 in Juryo).
