Aonishiki has been reinstated as Ozeki. At a press conference in Tokyo, he
revealed his feelings, saying, "I don't have any special feelings. My
desire to aim higher remains unchanged." In the previous tournament, where
he was demoted to Sekiwake, he secured his return to Ozeki with 10 or more
wins and also won his third yusho. He had injured multiple parts of his
left leg, and reflected, "It was a tournament where I went into in poor
physical condition, but I was very happy to win the yusho." Although his
injury has not fully healed, he participated in the summer jungyo which was
held until the 30th. He did not do any sumo, but he said, "I wanted to show
my face to the people in the provinces, even if only a little. I received a
lot of enthusiastic support, and it gave me strength," he said happily. He
was promoted to Sanyaku in Aki of last year. From there, he reflected, "I
went up and down to Ozeki, won yushos, and had makekoshis. So many
different things happened, it was such an intense time that it didn't feel
like just one year." He has returned to the rank of Ozeki after two
tournaments, and he savored the feeling, saying, "It's been a long time
since I've been called Ozeki." However, he declined to have his picture
taken with the Banzuke, saying, "I've had that done before, so that's
fine." He will continue to prepare for the first day of the tournament in
about two weeks, consulting with Ajigawa Oyakata. He expressed his
determination, saying, "I will do my best to wrestle in my own style and
aim for the top rank again."
