More from the occasionally entertaining ex-Tenkaihou, now known as Minami
Takayuki (41), who explained the transportation situation for rikishi on
his YouTube channel, "Minami's Gotchan Channel." Minami began by saying, "I
think every rikishi has been told this at least once," and then explained
how they ride in taxis: "When three sumo rikishi get in, there's absolutely
no way all three can fit in the back. There are two in the back and one in
the front seat." He continued, "Especially if the taxi driver has never
driven a rikishi before, they'll say, 'Oh, the car's height has sunk
today.' I've been told that hundreds of times. And while driving, they'll
say, 'The brakes aren't working very well today...' It might be the first
time for them, but for me it's the hundredth time," he said with a wry
smile. He then shared an anecdote about his former heyamate, former
Makuuchi Yamamotoyama. "There was a fellow trainee named Yamamotoyama who
was in the same heya as me. He weighed about 250 kilograms. We traveled
around a lot together because we were in the same heya. On one occasion
when we both had to take a taxi, I weighed about 160 kilograms, so together
we weighed 410 kilograms. When we wondered how we would fit, Yamamotoyama
sat in the back, and I sat in the front. Even though there were two of us,
one sat in the front and the other in the back," he recalled.
