Yesterday, the summer jungyo was held in Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, and
Takayasu , the oldest rikishi in Makuuchi at 36 years old, made an unusual
"extra keiko session" to show his determination. During the open keiko
session, he faced the sekitori nine times and also engaged in extended
butsugari with Atamifuji and Mitakeumi. Furthermore, he stayed behind alone
after keiko to continue his workout. In the deserted side of the dohyo, he
performed shiko about 100 times in about 15 minutes. "The training time is
short, so it's easy to neglect the lower body. I thought I needed to train
properly, so I did it," he explained. At the Nagoya tournament, he won 11
matches and received his seventh Fighting Spirit Prize. At the Aki basho he
will return to the joi ranks. "I will train my body (during the second half
of the tour) so that I can get results in honbasho. I want to return to
Sanyaku," he said with a determined expression.

Yesterday, Takasago beya began its annual summer training camp in Hiratsuka
City, Kanagawa Prefecture.  Asasuiryuu (26), who is certain to be promoted
to Makuuchi for Aki basho, worked up a sweat with basic exercises such as
suriashi and shiko. At the Nagoya tournament, he was ranked East Juryo 1
and had 11 wins. His older brother, Asakouryuu, had a kachikoshi in
Makuuchi , making it certain that they will become the 14th pair of
brothers in history, and the 12th pair to be in Makuuchi simultaneously. "I
was happy, but this is no time to get carried away. I want to go even
higher," he said, focusing on himself and setting "physical conditioning"
as the theme for this training camp. Just before the March basho this year,
his mother, Naomi, who had been battling cancer, passed away. After the
Nagoya tournament, he reported his results to the family altar and prayed,
"Please continue to watch over me." His kesho mawashi has the same  design
as his brother's but with different colors - a red base for his brother and
a green base for himself, so he is eagerly looking forward to the
dohyo-iri, but he vowed, "I will continue to do my best as usual."
