Komusubi Takayasu checked his physical condition by doing basic exercises
and facing young rikishi from his heya . He is proceeding with careful
adjustments due to chronic back pain, and commented, "I won't be able to
train to my heart's content, so I think it will be a tough tournament, but
I want to do everything I can and be ready for the opening day." Despite
his 7-8 makekoshi last basho, he remained in sanyaku. He would like to
take  the first step with double-digit wins for a possible return to Ozeki,
but he remained calm, saying, "First of all, I need to get a kachikoshi."
On the 1st, Endou also 35 years old, announced his retirement. Having faced
him many times, Takayasu praised him, saying, "His sumo skills were
outstanding. He's had a lot of injuries, but from now on, I want him to
take care of his body and take it easy."
