Subject: [Sumo news] - Oonosato trains
To: Sumo Newsletter2 <sumo-newsletter2 at googlegroups.com>
Oonosato trained against ex-Kisenosato his Oyakata today and was 8-2. First
time meeting after six months. During the session, his Oyakata called out
to him, "Let's go today," and they had ten matches in a row. He won three
matches in a row, and after one loss, he won four in a row. "It's been a
while since I last practiced with the Oyakata but I was able to fight well,
so I think it was good," he said of his results. In the past keikos with
his Oyakata, Oonosato was 7- 5 in the most recent Kyushu tournament last
year, and 10-7 in the basho before that. Although he never had a losing
record against him, the scores were close to even, but this time he
overwhelmed his Oyakata for the first time. Even when the Oyakata had his
favorite left hand grip, Oonosato got his right uwate and pushed forward,
showing a new style of sumo . "Until now, my right uwate was one of my
weaknesses, but today I was able to attack well from that position. My
body moved well. I didn't do it consciously, my body moved naturally. I
don't think it was bad," he said, appearing to have gained confidence.
Due to poor health, he was unable to do any sumo after the banzuke
announcement on April 28th, when training would have started in earnest. He
fought for the first time in six days at the soken on the 2nd, and didn't
look good. Since then, he gave up his day off and went to Sakaigawa stable
on the 3rd to train and had 20 bouts against Maegashira Hiradoumi, and has
been training energetically since then. He weighed 191 kg immediately after
the banzuke announcement, but now he is "about 185 kg. My body has changed
a lot," he said, looking toned. "Of course I'm tired after increasing the
amount of training every day, but today, after three bouts with my shisho ,
I really felt sharp. I'm grateful I was able to fight without feeling
tired, which shows I've grown as a person," he said, expressing his sense
of fulfillment. Nishonoseki Oyakata, who usually gives harsh evaluations,
said of his favorite deshi: who has turned things around and is now in good
condition, "I think he's perfect. He applied good pressure and left no
gaps. I think he's getting a lot better. You really only know it when
you're actually doing sumo. He's OK. I actually wanted to win half the
matches (laughs). I didn't feel like I had a chance to win," he said,
giving some positive encouragement. Still, Oonosato intends to further
improve his condition. "As the match progressed, the Oyakata gradually
became able to hold his own at the tachiai. That's not good for the opening
day. I need to be at my best from the first match. I'm reflecting on this,"
he said, still not satisfied. He has also become more "greedy", and the
atmosphere of "an imminent" promotion to Yokozuna is definitely
manifesting..
