 From the obituary in the New York Times:
"He died of heart failure in early April while receiving care at a 
Tokyo hospital, according to a statement from his family that was 
distributed by the United States military in Japan on Thursday."

Not sure why the US military was involved in distributing the news, 
but it conflicts a bit with the JSA statement.

I'm saddened to see him go, but at least he's at peace following a 
long period of very poor health.
