Founded in 1919, The National Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW/USA) is a non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian, self-governing, and member supported organization. The Maryland Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW/md) was founded in 1929. A Foundation for research and expansion of educational opportunities for working women was established by the National Federation in 1956.
To promote full participation, equity, and economic self-sufficiency for America's working women.
The issues that matter most to working women:
Laurel BPW was founded and chartered in 1956 by the late Naomi Hewett Madison, a concert cellist and music teacher.
Laurel BPW meets on the third Wednesday of each month at the Fort Meade Officers' Club, Fort Meade, Maryland. A networking and social period begins at 6:30 pm, dinner is at 7:00 pm, and the program is presented at 8:00 pm. A short business meeting follows the program.
In addition to regular meetings and special functions throughout the year, Laurel BPW activities offer active participants opportunities for personal growth and community service.
The Laurel BPW newsletter, "Fast-Track", keeps members informed of activities and subjectsof interest to them. The newsletter has become a major source of information on such topics as legislative issues, training courses, and business seminars.
Laurel BPW awards two types of scholarships, the Ruth Sussman Scholarship for local high school students and the Louise Crould Scholarship for working women.
Membership in BPW is open to all women and men who are actively engaged in business or the professions. Membership dues are collected annually.
