Sumo stablemaster Takanohana hospitalized after falling ill in Akita
August 21, 2018 (Mainichi Japan)

Takanohana (Mainichi)
Sumo stablemaster Takanohana was hospitalized after he fell ill while overseeing training by young wrestlers in the northern Japan city of Akita on Aug. 21, people familiar with the incident said.

Takanohana, 46, was in the city for a summer regional tour organized by the Japan Sumo Association (JSA). He was taken to the hospital by an ambulance from the Akita Prefectural Gymnasium, where he was conducting the training session. Takanohana, a former yokozuna grandmaster, was apparently conscious when the ambulance arrived.

Takanohana was demoted in March by the JSA over his handling of an assault scandal involving one of his apprentices. He was on the Akita tour as a judge.
