Of course they do. Criticize is exactly the right word for it. The media encompasses many entities. I also happen to think they overdo it with Asa quite a bit but the media are not bound by whatever dictates and rulings the Kyokai throw out to the public.

"The media has a right to criticize" ? Tell both sides of the story yes.
Give a viewpoint yes but to criticize really?

I do appreciate the viewpoint and personally think a lot of the negative
press toward Asa is pililng on..but the media has a right to criticize
regardless of whether or not he got permission from the Kyokai. It is Sumo
officials who do not really have a right after granting said permission. I
do not even want to contemplate viewing images of the Yokozuna dressed as a
school child.

As Asa got permission from the Kyokai to appear in Tokyo for the day, the
newpapers have NO right to criticize him for that. THEY should do their
due diligence before expressing anything in print. That they do NOT do
that shows what their reports are worth across the board.

Nobody puts Asashoryu in the corner.

Sumo grand champion Asashoryu debuts as fashion model
Sumo grand champion yokozuna Asashoryu of Mongolia (R) dances along with
female and male models.
Sumo grand champion yokozuna Asashoryu of Mongolia entertained the
audience
at a fashion show in Tokyo on Sunday, appearing on the stage as a burly
model
donning the uniform of a teenage Japanese student.
The yokozuna danced to the loud music along with female and male models
during the event Shibuya Girls Collection in front of some 20,000 people,
mostly
teenage girls, at Yoyogi national gymnasium.
''I felt a kind of tension that was new to me,'' an excited Asashoryu
said,
referring to the difference of the pressure from that he feels during
sumo
matches. ''The shrill voices were also impressive,'' the yokozuna also
said.
Asashoryu wore the school uniform for the show because he played the role
of
a junior high school student in a recent TV commercial film promoting a
beverage.
Asashoryu's appearance in the show, however, stirred fresh controversy
over
his behavior as the highest-ranking wrestler as he skipped training for
the
day prior to the key Spring Sumo Grand Tournament starting Sunday,
prompting
some sports newspapers to blast him in Monday's edition.
