Yes Jezz, I do indeed recall being waited upon by Mark Panek at
Kamaaina's -- and very professionally too (he explained that at one
time he had earned his living by working for a good restaurant). I had
forgotten that that was the occasion.

Here is another of those sumo dinners; this one I was inspired to put
into my Kansai Time Out column #100, of July 2000, writing about the
vast increase in foreigners' interest caused mainly by the Internet.

Quote follows: "Chanko Kirishima, Day 14 Natsu Basho. Nine
nationalities in a party of 15: Jarda from the Czech Republic, Kajsa
and Pelle from Sweden, Moti from Israel, Barry from Canada, Meike from
Germany, Barbara Ann from New York via Bhutan, Stewart and Michael from
Reno via Paris. Of those of us who hadn’t come so far, there were
Canadian Rob and American Donald from Yokohama (and Donald’s girlfriend
Yasuko, the only Japanese in our party), Australian Katrina in from
Osaka, Josh from the US living in Japan, and that batty old KTO
columnist who lives just down the road from where most of the sumo’s
at."
