This is an annual event at the Botanical Garden. I have gone the past two years and it's very interesting. If one lives in the area, you really should attend. If you are within a reasonable distance, make a weekend of it. The Festival is interesting. The Sumo is limited with demonstration 2 or 3 times a day, I think. If anyone wants suggestions for nearby hotels, e-mail me.

Subject: [sumo] [Local Interest] Missouri Sumo Demo Sept 5-7

I just happened across this in yahoo news -- a rare sumo event in the heartland
of the U.S.

As part of the St. Louis's Missouri Botanical Garden's Japan festival, William
"Tyler" Hopkins (ex-Sunahama) and Eric "Fats" Gaspar (ex-Koryu -- no, not that
one, the other one) will be putting on a sumo demonstration. Dates are Sept
5-7. Unfortunately, St. Louis is about 1,200 miles from my home, so I won't be
there. ;-)

"Back by popular demand, we are delighted to present the two sumotori who made
it possible for us to bring sumo to the Japanese Festival in 2005 for the first
time. "Koryu" and "Sunahama" are former professional sumo who now reside in
Hawaii."

I wonder if ex-Sentoryu had anything to do with getting this event off the
ground, seeing as he hails from St. Louis. It looks like he's off doing
pro-wrastlin' now (http://www.sentoryu.com/maineng.htm). Sigh...

Cheers,
