My family initially thought the same but after watching
the replays and even replaying the re-runs it became
clear that Ama's hand was down JUST before Toyonoshima
hit the dohyo.

They say that NFL football is a game of inches but I'm
afraid that ozumo is a game of millimeters. Apparently
the shinpan on that side considered the gap significant.

Day 15

I have watched the Ama-Toyonoshima bout repeatedly, in extremely slow
motion. (Okay, other people prefer to watch "Lost.")

Did anyone else think that Toyonoshima was out first? Not even mentioned on
the broadcast. And of course no mono-ii. It's not as though Ama was the
sole 'dead man.' They were both on their way out. If not a reversal, I
would at least have done it over. Maybe, at that late stage of the basho,
no one cared. And, it did secure a special prize for Toyonoshima. But, the
difference between 9 wins and 10 for Ama is important if he's going to have
any hope of ozeki promotion.
