I'm going to put my oar in (look out!). IMHO, Kotooshuu's initial success
had a lot to do with his physical makeup. Especially at the beginning,
most people didn't know what to do with him. Even now, it's
difficult because not only does he have really long limbs, but he's
pretty flexible. So you can push him around a lot and he just
kind of morphs.
But I've never really thought he's had great sumo until this basho.
For the most part this time he's displayed really excellent sumo. He's
corrected most of the technical flaws he had. And that's a good
thing, because I really believe those flaws were what got him
injured.
However, I didn't like his sumo on day 12. I *did* think it was
a henka, and it was really disappointing. His bout today was
just horrible. He had a "deer in the headlights" look like
he just couldn't believe in himself. I'm happy that he did
not resort to a henka. But I'm also happy that Amanishiki
kicked his butt so badly.
Hopefully it's a wakeup call. Because for the first time I find
myself really starting to like Kotooshuu. I've seen the kind of
sumo he's capable of. I want more!
