My apologies. Even though the previous message had a proper header
"Quotes from Day 9 (Madorosumaru)" it had the misleading subject line
"Quotes from Day 10 (Madorosumaru)" This message (below)is from day 10,
the previous is actually from day 9.

Quotes from Day 10 (Madorosumaru)

Asashoryu: (Back to normalcy with patsy Kotoshogiku) His mawashi was so
tight that it was hard to get a good grip. The moment I got a firm hold,
I went on the attack.

More Ryu: (Payback is sweet) I remembered what happened last basho. I
gave him a harite slap in the face to stop his initial charge.

Even more Ryu: (On facing Kotooshu next in a tightening yusho race) Ama
did some really good sumo. [Against Osh] I have to be careful not to get
into his favorite yotsu position. Things are getting interesting.

Hakuho: (Getting flustered by Ama's tachi-ai shift) I thought I
approached the bout in the usual way. My sumo just wasn't good enough.
Still, I thought I had won [when I unleashed the shitate-nage].

Ama: (Confessing that he was in a mindless frenzy during the bout) I
didn't even know he was the one that initiated the attack. All I knew
was it got too darn close at the end.

More Ama: (How close was it?) I thought my knee may have touched first.
I thought there would be a mono-ii.

Even more Ama: (Not at all afraid of the seemingly dominant yokozuna) We
belong to the same ichimon and have done a lot of keiko together. We
know each other's sumo well.

Yet more Ama: (Always mindful of his fan base) I couldn't very well lose
for the sake of all the people that cheer for me.

Isegahama Oyakata: (Analyzing his deshi's victory) The tachi-ai is
all-important. Hakuho went for the mawashi, but he didn't step forward
enough.

Kitanoumi Rijicho: (Adding his usual two cents) [Hakuho] wanted to grab
hold of [the little guy] so bad that he couldn't stay patient and ended
up rushing matters.

Kumagatani Oyakata: (On how his deshi tripped on the road to yusho) He
was looking at "15" before he reached 10. He probably thinks he needs to
have zensho yusho to be considered a dai-yokozuna.

Kotooshu: (Satisfied with his own sumo) It was important that I was calm
and collected. I am moving well.

More Osh: (Recalling Kakuryu's henka last basho and taking a cautious
approach) I thought it would be better to hit first at tachi-ai and then
move forward.

Even more Osh: (Asked about his chances for yusho) I don't have that in
my mind. [As for facing Asashoryu] I am not going to think about it. If
I think too much, I can't win.

Chiyotaikai: (Continuing the tailspin with his fifth straight loss) My
body is all over the place. I've forgotten how to win. I feel really down.

Kokonoe Oyakata: (Responding to Taikai's insistence on continuing) I
told him if he wants to go on, stop doing such miserable sumo.

Asasekiryu: (Giving the delinquent kid a sumo lesson) Well, as you know,
my opponent is really big. I was waiting for that perfect timing when he
moved his left foot.

Toyonoshima: (Resuming his mini-surge after a brief pit stop) Guys like
Ama and Kotoshogiku are bandied about as ozeki candidates, but I am not
even compared to them. I want to be included with that group.

Goeido: (So near yet so far) Last basho, I lost three straight after my
seventh win before I finally got kachi-koshi on the last day. [This
time] I want to secure KK early.

Hakuba: (Make-koshi in his makuuchi debut) I lacked keiko and the proper
spirit. I just want to do my best for the remaining five days.

Kitanoumi Rijicho: (Commenting on the first SRO at Kokugikan on Day 10
in eleven years) A big reason is that the yusho for the last few basho
haven't been decided until the very end. I am pleased that so many
people came despite the bad weather all day today. We need to respond to
the fans with good sumo.

Quotes of the Day

Aminishiki: (Defeating fellow Aomorian Takamisakari) The bout had the
aura of a rural high-school match, so I thought "What the hey, let's go
for it."

Takamisakari: (Bewitched, bothered and bewildered by the time-space
confusion) Something's wrong. I used to be able to beat him when we were
kids.
