Rikishi Talk Day 6 2008 Natsu Basho (Jonosuke)
Hakuba (1-5) over Kakizoe by okuritaoshi, 5.7 seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(His shisho at time of his joining passed away this morning and he was
able to dedicate his win today for him)
"He was a quiet man. Prior to this basho he arranged a celebration of
Makuuchi dohyo-debut for me..."
Toyohibiki (5-1) over Tochinoshin by tsukiotoshi, 4.0 seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Already getting his fifth win)
"I guess when things are going well for you and you can't be stopped.
Everything just goes your way."
(Toyohibiki is from the same town, Town of Toyoura, now a part of
Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture as Homasho. While student at
Hibiki High School, he was well known by locals for his misdeeds and as
a feared member of biker gang. After graduating, he never stayed on one
job for long, doing removing rust from tankers for a shipbuilder to
driving trucks but his mother finally convinced him to join Ozumo which
he did at the age of 20 years old. Never one to shy away from danger or
taking risks, he is known as one of the very few rikishi who cherish and
thrive on mixing it up with yokozuna Asashoryu in de-geiko).
Kakuryu (2-4) over Kokkai by hatakikomi, 4.4 seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Though winning on this day, once the previous day's outcome against
Wakanoho was brought up, still unable to hide displeasure)
"I am utterly an unlucky man."
Kisenosato (5-1)over Asasekiryu by sukuinage, 13.4 seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Not letting Asasekiryu overtaking him at the dohyo edge and prevailing
to notch the win)
"This will be a real confidence builder. I tried to lean on him without
getting myself over his lower back."
"Actually I don't feel anything especially different personally. It's
just the result is coming along."
(On facing Kotooshu on Day 7 but trying to remain humble)
"I am not sure how far I can go against the ozeki but I will do my best."
Takanohana oyakata, Chief Dohyo judge
------------------------------------------------------------
"He is different this basho. He gained more strength. He has excellent
Tachi-ai."
Naruto oyakata (former yokozuna Takanosato), Kisenosato's shisho
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I believe the fact that he beat a yokozuna on Day 1 led to build more
self-confidence."
Toyonoshima (5-1) losing to Takamisakari by okuritaoshi, 3.0 seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Losing his first this basho)
"I started panicking after finding myself not able to get the left
mawashi. But then I am still at 5 wins and 1 loss so...."
Takamisakari (3-3) over Toyonoshima
-------------------------------------------------------
(Beating the only Hira-maku rikishi without a loss)
"I tried to go with my own sumo, not getting carried away by his."
(Using his favorite right arm to unbalance his opponent)
"Well for myself, that is the most powerful weapon. Put it another way,
you can say I haven't got anything but this (rubbing his right arm)."
"But you cannot survive here unless you use everything in your arsenal."
Baruto (0-6) losing to Kotooshu by yorikiri, 11.4 seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Losing six consecutive bouts)
"We've only started. We still have a long way to go still. You know I
think we all should be more confident, right?"
Kotooshu (6-0) over Baruto
-----------------------------------------
(Going carefully against Baruto even though he is still crippled by his
left knee injury and by intentionlly moving to Moro-zashi from yotsu.)
"I switched my hands as I thought he had the uwate as well. But I am
moving naturally. The others talk a lot about going against me but now I
realize how they feel when they have to go against bigger opponents."
Hakuho (6-0) over Wakanoho by tsukidashi, 2.5 seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Asked if it was his best sumo this basho after torpedoing Wakanoho out.)
"I guess. I didn't have his mawashi at all. I wanted to get to the
mawashi but I just went with the flow. You know I am moving really well."
Asashoryu (5-1) over Kyokutenho by yorikiri, 10.5 seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Preserving his one loss record and now without having to tape over his
left calf since the previous bout.)
"No longer need to have the taping around my leg, I don't worry about
getting the pain there any more. So I can concentrate more on my sumo. I
think the flow is changing for better."

Former sekiwake Aonosato (former Tatsutagawa oyakata, real name: Sakari
Ogasawara) passed away from a shock relating to sepsis at a hospital in
Tokyo's Edogawa-ward on May 16. He was 72 years old. He was originally
from Aomori Prefecture. During his active career days he won five
Kinboshi from Taiho and once retired, he developed Shikishima and other

Basho. He made his Makuuchi debut at the 1959 Haru Basho. Known for his
formidable yotsu-zumo style he stayed in Makuuchi for 60 basho. At the
1963 Nagoya Basho he beat Taiho who at the time was on his 30 bout
winning streak. He had won one Shukun-sho and one Kanto-sho. He retired

The editors of the weekly Shukan Shincho magazine visited the Kokugikan
today to offer a formal apology to Tokitsukaze oyakata and Sandanme West
38 Kisomitsuru after publishing Kisomitsuru's photo in their latest
issue, identifying him as one of the charged rikishi relating to the
death of the heya's recruit last year.
"Our internal investigation revealed our error and we came here to
extend our sincere apology to the oyakata and the rikishi as well as to
the Kyokai. We will be posting the correction in our next issue," the
magazine's editor said.
