Subject: [sumo] OT: Japanese language question

        Recently I have been watching the TV series "Tails of Zatoichi" on
the MHz Network here (see: http://www.mhznetworks.org and
http://www.mhzworldview.org) which is shown in Japanese with subtitles.
So far I can recognize the words hai, iie, okaa-san and otoo-san. I know,
not even what you'd call a minimal vocabulary.

        Anyway, while watching I have found that I keep hearing a phrase
said quite often.  The best I can do is to spell it phonetically as;

        wa ka (d)i mash da

Does anyone know what this means or how it's used? It seems to come at
the end of sentences, as far as I can tell doesn't seem to tied to a
specific situation or event.

        So I humbly beseech this august membership for any insight they
might have on this. (Fancy words for "thanks in advance")

K-jo the ever curious and long winded
