from many sources, found and translated by MADOROSUMARU:

***************

Asashoryu: (Victory over Tokitenku was easier than he thought)
[Actually] I intended to get into migi-yotsu position. But the other
guy went to his knee rather quickly. The timing [of the hineri/twist]
was just right.

More Ryu: (Reacting to some cute little elementary school kids in
uniform who came to wish him well) He he. That makes me feel [warm
and fuzzy inside].

Hakuho: (No trouble in pushing out winless Toyonoshima) Some space
opened up between us, so I was able to proceed calmly. After all, my
opponent hasn't been doing too well.

Kumagatani Oyakata, Hakuho's shisho: (On his deshi's bad back) It
gets numb even when he is sitting down. I think it is really bothering him.

More Hakuho: (Grinning and bearing it) I'm okay. I am able to move
forward well. I am going to take it one bout at a time.

Kisenosato: (Unhappy with the way he won over Kotooshu) That was not
good sumo. I wasn't in good position till the very end.

More Kise: (On facing Hakuho next) I'm going to find some way to hang
in there with him.

Kotooshu: (Looking about ready to cry after his third straight loss) [. . .]

Kotoshogiku: (Defeating fellow sekiwake Ama to end his losing streak)
I am really happy today. I used up all my energy, but I got a win in
exchange so I don't feel too bad about that.

Takekaze: (Finally a win for the new komusubi) I thought I would
continue to lose all the way to senshuraku. Am I glad [I won].

More Take: (Not yet time to be optimistic) The way I have been losing
has been bad. [My opponents] just haven't been letting me do my own sumo.

Kakuryu: (Forcing out Kaio in an exemplary bout) I'm glad I was able
to get into the moro-zashi position. I learned from my loss yesterday
that I need to be aggressive in hitting and then attacking.

More Kakuryu: (No longer taken for granted after defeating three
ozeki) I'm getting used to being among the top rankers, so I can be
more relaxed in my sumo. I think I am morphing [into the kind of
rikishi Fay always thought I would become].

Hokutoriki: (Pushing out the mammoth Iwakiyama to remain unbeaten) He
did me a favor by pulling at me.

Tochiozan: (Another one enjoying a ride on the wave) I feel really
good. I kept going after the tachi-ai hit. I made sure I didn't pull
against an oshi specialist. It was also good that I was able to stay
low at the end. Everything went just the way I wanted.

More Tochi: (Reciting the "I am Genki" mantra) Things are different
from last year. My feet are moving well and I'm getting into the
proper kata for hitting and attacking. I just have to keep
concentrating on doing my own sumo.

Kasugano Oyakata, Tochi's shisho: (Talking about how injuries and
lack of keiko sidetracked his deshi) A rikishi has to do [plenty of]
keiko during the odd-numbered months [when there are no honbasho]. He
can't just goof around. That was what I was taught by [the great
master and dai-yokozuna] Tochinishiki. Now, finally, [Tochiozan] is
fit enough to do proper keiko.

Even more Tochi: (On the spurring effect of rising heya-mates,
Tochinoshin and Kimurayama) I have to make sure they don't overtake me.

Yet more Tochi: (Keeping things in perspective) Winning streak? First
thing first, my goal is #7.

Kakizoe: (Pushed out ignominiously by young Tochiozan) I am really
upset. I am going to do asa-geiko again tomorrow and gambarize some more.

Homasho: (Overwhelming new makuuchi Sakaizawa to maintain unblemished
record) I just didn't want to lose to him. I think it was good that I
went all out [from the start].

Shikoroyama Oyakata, Homey's shisho: (Somewhat surprised by his
pupil's good start) His performance was so bad in the last two basho
that I was worried about his confidence level.

More Homey: (Change of diet was the turning point) I started eating
better balanced meals with lots of vegetables.

More Shikoroyama: (The effect of the change was immediate) He started
gaining weight almost right away and was able to do good keiko. Until
last basho, he was not in good enough health condition to do much.

Even more Homey: (Proselytizing the tenets of "Learning through
suffering") A lot of things became clear to me during the two miserable basho.

Miyabiyama: (Winning his first against Aminishiki) Look, my opponent
has been in good form, having beaten yokozuna and ozeki. I'm glad I
was able to keep him from getting an inside position. With this
[win], I think the flow will be changing for me.

Takanohana Oyakata: (First mono-ii explanation since his promotion to
head shimpan) I thought, "Here it goes." I was really nervous.

More Takanohana: (Having done a good job by all accounts) There were
a lot of people in the audience, so I spoke in a loud voice in order
for everyone to hear me clearly. In any case, I followed the
principle "KISS"Keep It Simple, . . .

Bart Sez

Baruto: (Squishing Goeido for his fifth straight victory) Actually, I
still haven't been able to do my own sumo. [wicked grin]

Quotes of the Day

Hokutoriki: (Saying with a straight face after extending his winning
streak to six) Actually, I don't feel that much different from when I'm losing.

Miyabiyama: (Diametrically opposed, emotionally, to Hokutoriki) I
wanted my first win so badly that I went back to basics. Last night,
I thought of all things that included the character "ichi" (first or
one). So, I went to that [Korean barbecue] restaurant, "Yakiniku Ichi
Ryu." That, obviously, led to today's victory. Ha ha ha ha ha
