from MADOROSUMARU:

*******************

Asashoryu: (Humming in the bath after disposing troublesome
Aminishiki) Things are totally different from last basho. It's been
only three days, but I feel good and I've been doing good sumo.

Hakuho: (A nice win over the emerging Kakuryu) I was able to move
forward. I wasn't conscious of my birthday at all although I did
receive all sorts of e-mail.

More Hakuho: (Waxing reflective on his birthday) I suppose you can
say I'm still young. But, it's been [going-on] five years since I
became a sekitori at 18. I feel time really passes quickly. Now, I am
23. I feel I've gone through a lot.

Kakuryu: (Thinking positive thoughts despite his second loss to a
yokozuna) My tachi-ai was good. I was able to do better sumo than
before. It was a good learning experience.

Kotomitsuki: (Trying to explain his plight) Physically, I don't feel
that bad. In fact, it would be better if I were ailing. That way
there would be less pressure on me.

More Mickey: (Perplexed by his own ineffectiveness) My upper body and
lower body are not working together. They are totally out of synch,
doing their own thing.

Sadogatake Oyakata: (Sympathetically) He does fine during keiko, but
[his sumo at honbasho] has been an exercise in futility. A victory
would be the best remedy. If he could only win one, he might get some
momentum.

More Sadogatake: (Running out of advice) Maybe, he should just go out
and get drunk.

Even more Mickey: (Pathetically) I don't even have the energy to go out.

Kitanoumi Rijicho: (Empathetically) This is what happens when gears
get out of alignment. The result is miserable sumo. I don't think
even he expected to fall apart like this.

More Rijicho: (Disappointed by the ozeki ozumo is counting on) I
guess he is in a really tough situation. He's already 31 . . . 32,
right? If he doesn't come through this year, [there won't be any more
opportunities].

Final Mickey: (Asked about possible kyujo) I haven't given that any thought.

Asasekiryu: (El Endriago Rojo executes a nifty veronica on el toro)
He came charging like a bull. It was almost like he fell by himself.

Kaio: (An easy win as Takekaze does a plop down) That happened only
because I was on the attack. I can't let myself forget how this feels.

Chiyotaikai: (Falling as he slips attempting a pull-down) I
self-destructed. That's about all there is to it.

More Taikai: (Still optimistic about his aggressive sumo) I need to
carry the momentum over to tomorrow.

Kisenosato: (Another win over Chiyotaikai) I defeated him on shonichi
last basho and that got me going on a roll, so this win should boost
my confidence. But, we're just getting started.

Ama: (Losing to Wakanoho with some more dummkopf sumo) I think I
underestimated him a bit. He is young and he came at me with gusto.

Wakanoho: (Making Ama his first sanyaku victim) I was so fired up I
couldn't even hear the roar of the crowd. This is the dream that I've
had since I joined ozumo. I am really happy.

Homasho: (A good start after two straight make-koshi) I've gained
some weight back and I did better keiko than last basho. We are
seeing the results of all that.

Takamisakari: (Winning his third straight by dominating Futeno) I
wanted to get into my preferred yotsu position. My feet are also
moving well. I don't intend to let up quite yet.

Otsukasa: (Veteran elevator rikishi wins his third in a row by
teaching Nichidai kohai Sakaizawa a lesson) Well, I'm just taking it
nice and easy and pacing myself.

More Otsu-potsu: (Being from nearby Hyogo-ken) My older sister was
here to see me today. When she [and others from hometown] come to
cheer for me, I get energized.

Matsubara aka Takatenshu: (First Takanohana Beya shindeshi in three
years debuts with a loss) I was nervous. I am awfully frustrated and angry.

Takanohana Oyakata: (Taking advantage of a rare opportunity to be
shisho-like) This is only the beginning. To be frustrated and angry
is part of the growth process.

Quote of the Day

Aminishiki: (Sent all the way to the front row by Asashoryu) Before I
realized what had happened, I was flying in the air. I think I set a
record for flight distance.
