Well, it looks like the Reuters reporter is based in Beijing, so she
probably doesn't really follow sumo and--pick one of the
following--(1) didn't know that sumo wrestlers are given wrestling
names, (2) knew it but because of her insufficient knowledge or
interest didn't know that might make a better way of identifying him,
or (3) stuck it in, but a decision was made at an editor's desk
higher up the food chain that "well, that's nice that you know that,
but he's not a sumo wrestler so we don't really need that
information, do we?"
Not all that interesting, if you ask me, but then again I've been in
and out of the media business over the years and know how these
things can work. In my opinion, they would have had a slightly
better article by including it since you want to give readers
whatever information you can to help them contextualize the story and
adding "who wrestled under the name Kyokushuzan" would helped at the
cost of only six more words--not a heavy hit by
trim-everything-you-can-and-then-some wire service standards--but
sometimes these things slip under the radar and before you know it
you're dealing with the next crisis.
Interesting news, tho'.
Cheers,
Carl
