I don't know if this is true or not but I was told by a Dishnet rep that TV Japan has a exclusive contract with Dishnet - so they can't go to DirectTV - this is a problem for me because some of the other sport channels only are on Direct TV -
As to the language problem- on Dishnet, They give you a choice of Japanese or English and you ask for Japanese to get the English language side - it is sort of weird - but it works -
I don't like the ESPN coverage as they get many of the names wrong and the winning techniques as well - Plus I like all the ceremony and the instant replay on TV Japan - even if it means giving up something else to have it.
I just get the year round service but that is for other shows as well.(the kids shows are wonderful!)

I was absolutely thrilled to find this sumo marathon on and watched as much
of it as i could. I didn't care that it was the 1997 bashos, it was sumo on
TV.
My first exposure to sumo would have been on ABC's Wide World of Sports when
they would show matches on their Saturday show. Unfortuantely for me when
Wide World of Sports went awy so did my exposure to Sumo. It didn't return
until I found you nice folks in the online Sumo world in 2000 or 2001 I
believe it was. I live in household that has DirectTV and unfortunately
TVJapan did not receive enough votes to be added when they let the
subscribers decide on a new channel so I do not get to see any sumo except
when it shows up on ESPN2.
Hopes that TVJapan maybe added to DirectTV some time soon.
