TV Japan has no trouble relating the sumo coverage to the number of
subscribers they have because a significant fraction of subscribers
cancel their TVJ during the 6 non-sumo months, incurring a $5 charge
instead of $25 for the month, to save money. TVJ can see their
subscriber base going up and down each month. They must know that a
larger number are also only there for the sumo, but do not happen to
cancel on even months. I'd like to see a graph of their subscriptions by
the week. It must look bizarre. But they surely know how important sumo
is. If they were more creative with their programming, with sumo
specials or jungyo coverage on even months, they could do even better.
