He had just become Komusubi, and that injury was sustained on the 2nd or 3rd
day of the basho, so his time at that rank was sadly too short.

He was out for months with a severe enough injury to his leg that he could
still not walk when I visited him in the hospital weeks later.( I believe
that one section of his hamstring or another muscle was pulled out of its
connection. I am terrible at stats- someone out there can fill in the
particulars).

When he finally returned 2 or 3 basho later he had lost the ol¹ Mainoumi
sparkle and could not successfully continue. He retired soon after some
terrible performances ( stats please!) So you can say that Konishiki falling
on him truly, painfully ended his career.

When he did first return, it was during the time when I was spending my life
in the dressing room recording in drawings everything I saw. One very
interesting note( among many) is that I captured him sitting in the
shitakubeya wearing a Konishiki yukata! That picture is truly worth a
thousand words!
There is so much about Sumo that is deeply heartwarming, and not immediately
, or ever seen.

If you have never seen Mainoumi in action, that is a DVD worth finding!
