[sumo] Classic sumo

This run depressed me. These shows were the ones that got me into
sumo so many years ago. ESPN ran these "Sumo Digest" shows, which
were just re-edits I think of a show (now cancelled) that ran in
Japan. People who like sumo mailing list archives can even see how I
used to post to the list the airing times and show details on ESPN2, etc...
But sadly, those shows, which were fantastic entry points for sports
fans like me not familiar with sumo, no longer happen. I was hoping
I might see Asashoryu and Hakuho, but of course, no such luck.
It's funny, with the success of many other fighting shows such as
Ultimate Fighter, etc, I think there would actually be some
reasonable ratings for a bi-monthly sumo program on a channel like
ESPN2 or Classic, but I doubt that is in the offing. Again, it's
funny, because I would think both ESPN and Nihon Sumo Kyokai would
both make money and mutually benefit.
It is too bad more is not done to bring American and European fans to
the sumo table. It is such a unique Japanese export...just ask
Jacques Chirac. And it strikes me that sumo could use any means
available to bolster itself financially.
