Hello,
Sorry to tell this, but I would say that the guy on the other end with
such a massive back is Kirishima with his famous green mawashi.
Konishiki and Kirishima were promoted to Makuuchi exactely at the same
time for the Nagoya basho 1987. The "small" Kirishima (M12 E) won his
bout against the "big" Konishiki (M11 W) in this basho, and then a great
rivalry was born. The journalists, especially the photographs, just
loved it, and thus many pictures and articles were made when those two
faced each other.
Believe me, there is a lot more pictures of Konishiki facing Kirishima
than Konishiki facing Mainoumi. Kirishima was 19-19 against Konishiki,
but Kirishima won their only bout in Juryo, so the "small" ozeki
Kirishima had the edge over the "big" Konishiki. In other words, David
kicked Goliath's butt on more time !
During hon-basho, Konishiki faced only three times Mainoumi, and the
first time was on the shonichi of the Hatsu basho 1995, so after the
release of the Aerosmith album....
Before saying you're watching Mainoumi in this kind of picture, you
should always look closely at the back and the thighs of the opposite
rikishi. Kirishima was way more muscular than the migty mouse Mainoumi.
Greetings from Paris,
Thierry
