When the family first saw the body, their shocked remarks were quoted 
in the press; my recollection is that  the ear was partly detached by 
the savage blow that smashed the jaw. That the ear 'was torn away' was  
a new expression in the Economist article -- which, BTW, was  a very 
creditable piece of work considering that the (unattributed) writer is 
a relative newcomer to Japan who put the article together in a week or 
less.
