Let me see if I have this right:
In the '40s you wore a 'zoot suit'.
In the '50s you were 'hep' -- a real 'hepcat'.
'Hep' changed to 'hip' around the '60s.
'Hep' meant you were hot. 'Hip' meant you were cool.
Cool jazz was 'hip'. Dave Brubeck was hip. Brubeck's alto sax player,
Paul Desmond was even more hip -- the coolest.
From 'hip' came 'hippie' -- when?
Next, the 'beat' generation.
If you were a member of the beat generation, you were a
'beatnik' (coined by, I think, the late Herb Caen -- columnist for the
San Francisco Chronicle.)
