Baruto (12-1) over Katayama by uwatenage
----------------------------------------------------
(Not feeling pleased with his showing today as he
barely won after a mono-ii, reversing the gyoji's
gunbai)
"I thought we'd have a rematch. It wasn't a good sumo
at all."
(His injured left knee not yet fully recovered but
want to ensure his return to Makunouchi)
"Unless I put a heavy bandage around my knee, it's
still scary. But as long as I keep moving forward, I
should be OK. It means I will need to go down lower. I
don't have as much power as I used to so I really need
to go with a good sumo for the next two days."
"It's rather sad watching Makunouchi bouts on TV while
you are still in Juryo. I want to get back to
Makunouchi as quickly as possible."

Kyokutenho (10-3) over Takekaze by yorikiri, 12.8
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
"I am basically aiming for a double digit finish."
(About the yusho)
"You are kidding, aren't you? Don't even think about
it. But I am happy to see my name still there on the
race board though."
(On facing Ama tomorrow in the battle of three loss
rikishi.)
"I don't like it at all. I gotta be careful not get
Tsuri-otoshi done to me like he did on day 12."

Kaiho (3-10) over Ryuo by tsuki-otoshi, 0.8 second
-----------------------------------------------------------
(The first win since day 2 this basho)
"By the time you realize the whole basho is almost
over. There isn't even a thing to reminisce about."

Kasugao (9-4) losing to Miyabiyama by hiki-otoshi, 2.0
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Suffering his fourth loss and dropping out of the
yusho race)
"Why did it happen? Unless I gain more strength, I
can't expect myself to do better."

Miyabiyama (8-5) over Kasugao
-------------------------------------
(Gaining kachi-koshi and will be in a position to face
the yokozuna next basho)
"I am at a rank I had an outside chance of facing the
yokozuna so I am happy to get kachi-koshi. I was
thinking of going for the first kin-boshi (from
Hakuho) but then Toyonoshima took it away from me (on
day 11)."

Toyonoshima (7-6) losing to Ama by hatakikomi, 3.4
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Still winless and clueless against Ama after all
these basho)
"If I tell you I don't mind facing him, then I am
probably lying to you."

Ama (10-3) over Toyonoshima
-------------------------------------
(Going against an opponent he never lost in the past
nine encounters)
"I wasn't really thinking about how well I did against
him in the past. You must recognize he has a lot of
strength."
(Still within the yusho range)
"More than keeping my three loss record, I am
extremely pleased to get a double digit win record."
"As the record could lead into a possibility of the
next rank, I will be expected to show more
responsibility as I proceed. From that point of view,
this gives me more self-confidence to face the next
basho as well."
"I am getting exhausted right now but we only have two
more days so I will do all my best."

Kisenosato (5-8) losing to Dejima by oshi-dashi, 4,4
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Returned to komusubi but suffering make-koshi)
"Hmmm....Ahh....couldn't have done anything...ahhh"

Aminishiki (8-5) losing to Homasho by yoritaoshi, 15.6
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Mono-ii decision going against him and losing.)
"I was hoping for a rematch. I was attempting an
Utchari while I was falling down so I guess at that
point they could justifiably argue I was already a
Shini-tai. That's the end of the story."

Wakanosato (5-8) over Kotooshu by sukuinage, 5.4
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Beat an ozeki but still showing a sign of regret.)
"Obviously I should be enjoying the win but I already
got make-koshi yesterday. If I had this yesterday,
perhaps the flow would have been turned into more
favorable direction."

Chiyotaikai (9-4) over Goeido by okuri-dashi, 3,3
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(Overwhelming the newcomer with power and sharp push)
"He came straight out front, fair and square and
fought me well. I can't praise him highly enough. He
had a good tachiai and did tremendously well. I am
certain that he would climb up on the banzuke and will
be staying among the top ranks."
(Comparing himself to Goeido in their Makunouchi debut
basho)
"Actually I think I was more fierce. Like I stared
hard at my opponents and torpedoed them around you
know."
(Totally confident today?)
"Are you kidding? I even prepared myself another
comment in case I lost."

Goeido (10-3) losing to Chiyotaikai
-----------------------------------------
(Unable to show his sumo)
"I couldn't apply any pressure. I went out too high. I
witnessed an expert execution and master workmanship.
It was a good learning experience."
"Well, I was going against a high ranked rikishi after
all. I guess this could have been expected. He was
already an ozeki when I was still in Grade 6."
(However the Judging members thinking so highly of
him, they postponed their day 14 Torikumi release for
an hour and put Goeido against the yokozuna. This is
the eighth time a yokozuna is facing a Makunouchi
debut rikishi since the yokozuna rank was formalized.
It is the only fourth time since the 1949 Natsu basho
when the 15 day basho was instituted. The last time it
happened was yokozuna Takanohana facing Tosanoumi at
the 1995 Nagoya basho.)
"I am really happy to be given an opportunity to face
the yokozuna. Prior to the basho I never even imagined
such a thing could be possible. I will go all out
against him tomorrow."

Sakaigawa oyakataa (former komusubi Ryogoku), Goeido's
shisho
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(On his deshi, Goeido, meeting the yokozuna)
"He should be grateful to the Judging group. I know he
will be really happy to hear that."

Otowayama oyakata (former ozeki Takanonami)
-------------------------------------------------------
(Facing a Makunouchi debut rikishi three times as
ozeki)
"Obviously there is far more pressure to the high rank
rikishi. The new Makunouchi rikishi will be coming to
you all out in total abandon so it's really scary."

Hanaregoma oyakata (former ozeki Kaiketsu), Director
of Judging
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(On Goeido facing the yokozuna)
"We have selected him especially because of his
excellent showing in this basho and having the good
record. This particular match-up is precisely the
result of Goeido competing so well and doing his
best."

Kotomitsuki (8-5) losing to Hakuho by maki-otoshi, 9.5
seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Regretting his loss, coming so close to beating the
yokozuna)
"I got myself in the best form. It went exactly like I
wanted but I didn't pull him close enough from the
left. I was oh so close from winning it."

Hakuho (11-2) over Kotomitsuki
--------------------------------------
(Now atop the yusho race board all alone by setting
aside pesky Kotomitsuki)
"I panicked for a moment. But I had my right arm in. I
believe I had a good timing at the end. I could have
stayed in, possibly because I was taller."
(Asking if he intends to show the power of yokozuna to
the new kid on the block tomorrow.)
"Certainly. I kind of expected they would put me
against him. I think it should be a great bout."

Kitanoumi oyakata, chairman of the Kyokai
---------------------------------------------------
(On Hakuho's bout today)
"He must have been relieved quite a bit."
(On the yusho)
"Well the flow is going for Hakuho but you cannot
really tell yet."
(On facing Goido)
"I am sure it won't be easy for him. But I think still
it's 9 to 1 for Hakuho."

Billy Blanks (creator Tae Bo and Billy's Boot Camp
Training video series)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(On meeting Hakuho in the dressing room)
"This is like a dream, be able to get Hakuho-zeki's
autograph. I am thinking of including sumo moves in my
training regimen next."

I am in here, I want to do all my best to become a

The first graduate from a national university to enter
Ozumo since Ichinoya, Jonidan East 82 Masumeidai, 23,
of Kise beya has won his first kachi-koshi in three
basho by getting his fourth win against Daitenpaku of
Asahiyama beya on day 12. "I am really happy as it's
been a while," Masumeidai said.

He also experienced his first mawashi matta as
Daitenpaku's mawashi was coming undone. "I was in an
awkward position myself as well so it was really had
to remain still with my legs fronzen," Masumeidai
commented. "Actually I bumped into him later in a
corridor and told him, 'I had a good bout today. And
thank you" and bowed to him. (Daitenpaku also from
Aichi Prefecture is four years younger than
Masumeidai.)

"Makushita and Sandanme rikishi gave me training
sessions prior to the basho. I was going with good
tachiai during the training but once the basho started
I couldn't get any good tachiai going. You know at
least the 80% of sumo is tachiai. It's so crucial that
I have to try to get it corrected."

It's been reported that Asashoryu's personal physician
Dr. Masaki Honda will be visiting Mongolia to review
Asashoryu's latest conditions sometime next week.

"I haven't heard the exact date yet but I understand
he will going there shortly," Takasago oyakata,
Asashoryu's shisho, said on September 20.

"The doctor will be checking Asashoryu's mental
condition again", Takasago oyakata added. "If
Asashoryu has recovered, then along with treaments for
his elbow and lower back, he should be initiating some
type of exercise and training."
