Baruto (11-) losing to Wakanoho by yorikiri
---------------------------------------------------
(If he won the bout, he could have become the first to
win the Juryo yusho on day 12 since Kotonofuji done it
at the 1977 Haru basho but submitting meekly to
Wakanoho's attack and lost as he tried to cover his
injured left knee at the end)
"When I am backing down, I can't really generate my
strength."

Wakanoho (8-4) over Baruto
----------------------------------
(At Juryo West 1 getting kachi-koshi and a possibility
of promotion the next basho as the sixth youngest
Makunouchi promotion rikishi since the World War II at
19 years and 3 months old)
"I haven't really got the feeling yet that I'd be a
Makunouchi rikishi."

Iwakiyama (4-8) losing to Yoshikaze by tsuki-otsohi,
3.5 seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Just returned to Makunouchi after winning the Juryo
yusho last basho.)
"They let me leapfrogged so many ranks up the banzuke
and got me up here. But now I am in danger of falling
down again unless I win one more at least. Perhaps
I've been having too many passive sumo."

Yoshikaze (8-4) over Iwakiyama
-------------------------------------
(On getting his kachi-koshi on day 12)
"I am a bit surprised myself. For the first time I can
return to the Kyushu, my home basho, as a Makunouchi."

Kasugao (9-3) over Futeno by Nicho-nage, 4.5 seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------
(Winning with a powerful display of Nicho-nage, the
last performed in Makunouchi by Kaio at the 1996 Haru
basho.)
"It's not that much of a big deal (he did it himself
as Juryo two years ago Nagoya basho and it's also a
move in Korean Sumo, Silm). But it's not something you
can plan for. It was a result of flow and timing."
"I could see his foot in front of me. I thought I
could win if I hooked my foot."
"I won't get too concerned about getting a double
digit record or anything like that but just keep going
with a moving-forward sumo."

Kasuganishiki (4-8) losing to Takamisakari by
yorikiri, 7.5 seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(At Makunouchi 16, the last Maku rank, was on four
bout winning streak earlier but now on a eight bout
losing streak.)
"For a while I was beginning to feel so good about
myself. Maybe I am putting too much pressure on myself
somewhere. I guess I will have to get Tochiozan to
give me more training sessions so I can come back up
here in Makunouchi again."

Kakizoe (9-3) over Toyohibiki by tsuki-otoshi, 5.7
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(Withstanding destructive pushing from Toyohibiki and
getting his ninth win ranked at the Makunouchi
bottom.)
"I knew he could hit so hard so I tried not get
overpowered. I guess I got the win because I hit him
up front."
"I want to go against my opponent in my own way, the
way I am capable of. I want to keep doing a good job
the rest of this basho."

Toyohibiki (6-6) losing to Kakizoe
----------------------------------------
(Collapsing precipitously in the second half)
"I am running ahead of myself mentally. I need to take
a weight off my shoulders so I can face my opponent
more calmly."

Kotoshogiku (8-4) over Toyonoshima by oshi-dashi, 2.5
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Getting his first kachi-koshi in four basho)
"It's been a while. I was thinking to get back to the
fundamentals and just hit him hard. I am relieved
somewhat now."
"As you know the next basho is my home basho in
Fukuoka. I am really looking forward to see all my
local fans again. They have been reminding me that I'd
better start getting a kachi-koshi soon too."

Toyonoshima (7-5) losing to Kotoshogiku
---------------------------------------------
(Beating the yokozuna the day before but ended up
losing easily today.)
"When you don't generate enough power at tachiai,
that's what happens to you. All this after I won
yesterday and even against an opponent I hated to lose
to too."

Goeido (10-2) losing to Ama by Okuri-tsuki-otoshi,
18.4 seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Hitting the Sanyaku wall)
"He was tough. He did everything better than me."
"I want to move on now and do my best without losing
my concentration or motivation."

Ama (9-3) over Goeido
----------------------------
(Even weighing 120 kg, showing who was the boss by
finishing off 140 kg young turk with a rough
throw-down.)
"I have far more experience than he does. There is so
much difference between low and high banzuke ranks. I
wasn't nervous at all. I really wanted to show him
that he can't treat a Sanyaku with the same way. I
felt he was rather lightweight really. But I feel so
good."
"I've been training so hard since the Nagoya when I
finished with 7 wins and 8 losses. I had so much
regret about not being able to keep my Sekiwake rank.
So I worked out quite a bit more during the Jyungyo
tour too. If ever a chance presents itself, I want to
be ready to fight for the yusho too."

Ajigawa oyakata (former yokozuna Asahifuji), Ama's
shisho
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Actually I wasn't concerned about Ama today. The
opponent still has so much weakness. Ama is unlike
many opponents he has been facing up to now.
Especially Ama possesses such quickness in his sumo. I
had nothing to worry about him at all today."

Asasekiryu (6-6) over Chiyotaikai by okuri-dashi, 13.9
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Beating Chiyotaikai and prevailing over all three
ozeki, and bringing back his record up to 6 wins and 6
losses)
"I really want to get kachi-koshi especially now that
I beat all ozeki this basho."
"I got really psyched up watching the Ama bout. Now we
have three more days to go to make a difference."

Chiyotaikai (8-4) losing to Asasekiryu
-------------------------------------------
(On facing Goeido tomorrow)
"Man, this got to be the first and last time I should
be facing a Maku-debut kid. I won't let the change of
generations happen just yet. But it makes you really
nervous you know. If I did a sumo like today, you
never know what will happen. I even asked the heya's
young (lower rank) rikishi about him and he said the
odd of winning was 6 to 4, him being 6. What is this?"

Kotomitsuki (8-4) over Miyabiyama by oshi-dashi, 8.7
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Barely managing to get a win and kachi-koshi after
Miyabiyama pulled him in)
"In the last several days I haven't been able to do
any decent tachiai. I couldn't get the mawashi but I
felt comfortable today. But I still feel my sumo is in
a disarray. It was more like I just got a win today,
nothing more."
"It felt so long to get kachi-koshi. Obviously an
ozeki shouldn't saying he is happy to get just
kachi-koshi."
"After a bout, I do sense I am rushing myself."
(On vs Hakuho on day 13)
"Well I'd like to show my presence at least."

Kotooshu (8-4) over Takekaze by yoritaoshi, 4.5
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(Seeing Kotomitsuki win and overwhelming dimunitive
Takekaze)
"I wanted to follow him (Kotomitsuki) and get a good
win."
(On getting kachi-koshi on day 12)
"I had much higher expectation than this."

Aminishiki (8-4) losing to Hakuho by hiki-otoshi, 2.8
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(On four bout losing streak. His feet slipping and
easily losing by a pulldown.)
"I had a good tachiai. I was trying to get the right
mawashi and I moved to left. I am doing exactly
opposite of what I am thinking. Ah....ahhhh...."
(Injuring his left wrist)
"I fell down to the dohyo rather awkward. And I
slipped badly."

Hakuho (10-2) over Aminishiki
------------------------------------
(After seeing Goeido lose on TV monitor)
"I thought, 'Ok, he lost, I had to do my best now in
my bout'."
"I decided to take a moment to watch Aminishiki come
out of the tachiai. You can never tell what he would
come up with you know. I was able to slap him down
with a good timing."
"Obviously I was feeling I could not afford to lose
consecutively today. But it's good to have your own
family. I have my kid too. They can really help you
settle down and calm down."
"But it feels good to be on the top again."
(On a possibility facing Goeido)
"Well if it happens, it happens then. But if it does,
that sounds good too."

He was able to leave a hospital on September 19 after
undergoing more detailed examination of his condition.
