Joe,
I know I say this over and over again, but thank you for posting this material. It is very interesting to hear what the rikishi are feeling during the basho.

Subject: [sumo] [Spoiler] Rikishi Talk Day 9 Aki Basho 2007

Kyokutenho (7-2) losing to Goeido by sotogake, 15.1
seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Losing to one loss rikishi and a Makunouchi rookie)
"I figured I'd become a wall to the kid, showing him
how it's done and all that. But he competed really
smart. I am upset for sure but then I did everything I
could and then lost.... it's that I just never even
expected he'd hook his foot on me."

Goeido (8-1) over Kyokutenho
------------------------------------
"When he pulled in so close, I thought perhaps I was
done for. I was just plainly desperate then."
(Smartly using his leg to down taller Kyokutenho)
"I've been using my knee regularly so it was nothing
more than a natural reaction."
(Getting his kachi-koshi in day 9, the earliest
kachi-koshi by a new Makunouchi rikishi since
Tochinohana at the 2000 Natsu basho)
"I never even dreamed I could get kachikoshi this
quickly. I can't even think about the yusho but I'd
love to get a double digit record."
"I know Tochiozan (his rival) won 11 in his Makunouchi
debut basho so I think about it a lot. But ever since
I lost to him this basho, my sumo has been improving."

Ryuo (2-7) losing to Takamisakari by yorikiri, 4.9
seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------
(Proving someone can be in a more dire situation than
Takamisakari is.)
"I just want to end this nightmare right now even I
leave here with a 2 win - 13 loss record."

Takekaze (7-2) over Kokkai by oshidashi, 3.0 seconds)
---------------------------------------------------------------
"I've been coming up with pretty good sumo up to now
so I am not nearly concerned about wins and losses
right now. As far as I am concerned I feel I have been
accumulating more experience so I don't get as nervous
anymore."

Kasugao (7-2) over Toyohibiki by kotenage, 11.7
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"He came in with thrusts to the throat and they were
really hard. But I was telling myself however hard he
kept pushing me, I'd endured them and do the best I
can. But let me tell you he has so much power."

Kotoshogiku (5-4) over Kakuryu by yorikiri, 12.8
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(Now having more wins than losses)
"This was a huge win for me. It's a consecutive win
and I won it with a good sumo."
"But young guys can generate so much more power. I
really hate to face them."

Wakanosato (3-6) over Aminishiki by yorikiri, 12.2
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Not only stopping Aminishiki's winning streak but
also getting his 600th win)
"He is not really an easy opponent to go against. I am
so happy. Doubling the pleasure today. I was really
psyched up for this one especially as everyone was
paying so much attention to him. I am all ready to go
home now and celebrate big."

Aminishiki (8-1) losing to Wakanosato
--------------------------------------------
(Losing the battle of Aomori and his winning streak
coming to an end)
"We couldn't match our tachiai timing the first time
and in the second I went out with his timing."
"I really don't know what it is. I wish I could have
gone against him, just like I go against anyone else."
"Ah...it was such a bad sumo. Totally pits. I know I
cannot go against 'chest to chest' against someone
like him. Normally when you get a kachi-koshi, you can
relax more and you should show a good sumo."
"I really wanted to stay undefeated until I face the
yokozuna."
(Losing to Wakanosato he hated to face but now facing
another rikishi he hates to face, Chiyotaikai
tomorrow)
"I am not particularly concerned about him."

Chiyotaikai (7-2) losing to Homasho by oshidashi, 6.4
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"He must have studied me well. I have nothing but
admiration for him. Now I will need to study his moves
more carefully so the next basho, I should be all
prepared. I really have to sharpen up my moves."

Homasho (5-4) over Chiyotaikai
--------------------------------------
"I was able to hit him from below and that was the
difference. The bout went exactly the way I'd imagined
it would go. I'd been practicing a lot on getting
Tsuppari and getting pulled. So I knew when to go
after him. The bout like this will give me more self
confidence."
(On a possibility of Sanyaku promotion if he can get
kachi-koshi)
"I actually try not to think about it that much."

Kotomitsuki (6-3) losing to Toyonoshima by yorikiri, 3
min 8.0 seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Losing the three minute death struggle against
Toyonoshima)
"I couldn't hit him hard at all at the tachiai. He got
his arms in so firm and so deep, I even couldn't do
anything. I did the best I could but that wasn't
enough today."
"I am never fond of his type and his type of sumo."

Toyonoshima (6-3) over Kotomitsuki
-------------------------------------------
(Prevailing after long three mintutes)
"I could feel my arms were getting weaker at the end.
It was so hard. My arms were started going
numb."
"In a hon-basho, I get so concerned about winning, I
try to get myself into a Hidari-yotsu form at all
costs as I know I can compete comfortably from there.
But the problem is that when I do, I am also providing
my opponent a chance to generate more power against
me. So prior to this basho, I got myself back to
solely go with a moving-forward style of sumo. When I
keep moving forward, it will give me more confidence
to get a win."
"I want to keep winning more and more so I can get
another opportunity back to return to a Sanyaku."

Kitanoumi oyakata, chairman of the Kyokai
---------------------------------------------------
(On Toyonoshima)
"After witnessing something like this, by now everyone
will have realized how strong Toyonoshima is."

Kotooshu (6-3) over Kisenosato by yorikiri, 5.1
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------
"I won today but I tend to lose when things do count."

Dejima (4-5) losing to Hakuho by sukuinage, 4.4
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------
(Pushing Hakuho all the way to the edge)
"I was hoping, for a brief moment the spectators went
'Whoa!' for me."

Hakuho (8-1) over Dejima
-------------------------------
(No problem by a surprise henka Inashi side attack
from Dejima)
"I was kind of surprised by it as that's the type of
things his opponent does to him and he never does. I
remained calm and I had a good timing to beat him."
(Having his lower back massaged every day to ease the
pressure.)
"Well we all have something or other. But I have been
able to sleep well and I feel good otherwise. Anyway
so far I am doing well and I know it's from now on
that really counts."

Kumagatani oyakata, Hakuho's personal oyakata
----------------------------------------------------------
(On Hakuho)
"If he only can withstand all these pressures this
year, he should be on the way to display real solid
sumo next year."

Kitanoumi oyakata, chairman of the Kyokai
---------------------------------------------------
(On the yusho race)
"When the situation moves this way, obviously it
should revolve around Hakuho. "

Hakuho is planning to perform a yokozuna dohyo-iri at
his yokozuna promotion reception party to be held in
Ulaanbaator after this basho on Septmeber 28. The
party will have invited guests of 500 including the
president of Mongolia. As Ryuo will be invited to
attend the party there is no problem of having his
regular Tachimochi. He is asking Kyokutenho who will
be also visiting Mongolia at that time to be his
Tsuyuharai.

The Kyokai office has already given an OK to perform
the dohyo-iri at his reception as well as Oshima
oyakata has agreed to have Kyokutenho work as a
Tsuyuharai for the dohyo-iri as he belongs to the same
Ichimon. Asashoryu has performed his Unryu style dohyo
iri during his heya's training camp in Mongolia in
June last year.

"As the people will see their first live Shiranui
dohyo-iri there, I am sure they will be pleased to
hear the news," Kumagatani oyakata, Hakuho's personal
oyakata said.

To make a triumphant return, Hakuho will need an
impressive showing at this basho. "If he can keep
going with a tachiai like he is doing right now, it's
unlikely he will drop many bouts," Kitanoumi oyakata
said.

Records:
----------
Wakanosato - 600th career win
Kotomitsuki - 700th career appearance
Toyonoshima - 400th Career and consecutive appearance

Yusho Race Board
---------------------

Makunouchi:
1 loss - Hakuho, Aminishiki, Goeido
2 losses - Chiyotaikai, Takekaze, Kasugao, Kyokutenho,
Kakizoe

Juryo:
0 loss - Baruto

On Asashoryu:
----------------
Kitanoumi oyakata: He should try to come back in Japan
right after the Kyushu basho to get back in shape.
When you are away for two months, it will take two
months to regain your shape back. I'd think it will
better for him in Japan from a weather point of view
(as it gets colder in Mongolia). Ideally he should
start training sessions against sekitori right after
the basho is over to prepare for the Hatsu basho."
"I am not giving any specific date but we should be
consulting with his physician to determine when will
be the ideal time for his return."
"I've seen him smiling so I believe his condition has
improved a great deal with his family around."

Takasago oyakata: I believe he is doing some light
running at the camp he is staying."

Hakuho's shisho Miyagino oyakata (former Juryo
Kanechika) has been hospitalized for an unspecified
condition on September 16.

"He started complaining of a chest pain so we took him
right away to a hospital," Kumagatani oyakata,
Miyagino beya's oyakata, said.

He is currently undergoing more examination on his
heart and is expected to stay in the hospital for
several more days.
