Yoshikaze (4-1) over Tochiozan by tsukiotoshi, 2.5
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
"I was thinking of taking him by bulldozing him out
but then I found myself doing an Inashi"
Kyokutenho (4-1) losing to Roho by yorikiri, 4.7
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------
(The winning streak coming to an abrupt end at four
and he couldn't even celebrate his birthday with a
win)
"I really wanted to get this one. I got out of the
tachiai not really knowing exactly what to do."
Takekaze (4-1) over Tamakasuga by hikiotoshi, 6.9
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Downing his senior from Chuo University Tamakasuga by
moving all over the dohyo and getting his fourth win.)
"I figured if I stopped, I wouldn't have a chance. In
honor of facing my senior at the school today, I did
shave before coming over here."
Kasugao (5-0) over Tokitsuumi by Uwatenage, 4.4
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(Winning five straight since day 1 for the first time)
"I don't even remember if I ever had such a streak. I
was able to throw him good because I stepped in hard."
Takamisakari (2-3) over Kaiho by oshidashi, 12.3
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(Winning without bothering to go for the mawashi)
"How did I manage to win today? Me, I kept telling me
myself to keep calm even he got my mawashi."
Kotoshogiku (2-3) losing to Toyohibiki by oshidashi,
12.5 seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Couldn't offer any resistance against Toyohibiki's
persistent push)
"I guess I was just overwhelmed by his power. For some
reason my right arm does not stay tight to my body. I
really need to put more thought on this"
Toyohibiki (3-2) over Kotoshogiku
-----------------------------------------
(Winning his third in his second Makuuchi basho and
showing no fear against anything and anyone)
"I want to keep on winning so I can face more higher
ranked rikishi."
Miyabiyama (4-1) over Tokitenku by oshidashi, 10.6
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Almost getting tripped into Tokitenku's leg move)
"The leg came in. You know he just missed me. It was
really amazing."
(On having a bad feeling sitting on West side as the
preceding eight bouts were all won by rikishi from
East)
"I hated to be there as everyone from East won."
(Asked if he was trying to stop the trend all by
himself.)
"Absolutely! (laughs)"
Kisenosato (2-3) over Tochinonada by waridashi, 16.0
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Finally getting his second win, a win by a rare
kimarite Waridashi, the last one was five years ago)
"I didn't let go of my left uwate and that got me the
win. I also used my right leg well."
"But I am just too inconsistent. But I was good today.
Hopefully I can continue on with what I did today."
Aminishiki (5-0) over Asasekiryu by shitate-hineri, 1
min 12.9 seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Coming back to the dressing room with sweat pouring
after 1 minute of struggles against his fellow
sekiwake)
"I am totally exhausted. I realized I had no
endurance. I waited for him to grab the mawashi and
start moving over to me. I am totally done for the
whole basho."
(On winning five straight to start the basho)
"I am not greedy. I have enough. Just let me do things
whatever way I like and leave me alone."
(On being told he was the only one above Sanyaku to
stay without a loss)
"I gusse I am fullfiling my duty as sekiwake then."
Asasekiryu (4-1) losing to Asasekiryu
--------------------------------------------
(Showing his regret over the loss against the other
sekiwake)
"I had to be the one to get myself in the form he
managed to get himself in. I couldn't grip the mawashi
well. I tried not to think of him as a rival sekiwake
but I kept thinking about it."
Kotomitsuki (4-1) over Wakanosato by hatakikomi, 4.1
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I couldn't get the timing right at the tachiai. It's
strange really. Because I knew both of us were not in
any trickery out there."
(Won the bout but not happy with the way he won)
"I just floated out of the tachiai. It was a scenario
for loss. I got pushed because I didn't go out with
power but he happened to pull so that helped me out."
"I had good tachiai for day 1 and 2. I will need to
rectify it somehow as I go along."
Dejima (2-3) over Kaio by yorikiri, 8.1 seconds
-------------------------------------------------------
(On Kaio)
'I could feel he didn't have any power at all in the
end. But then who am I to speak about someone else's
problem?"
Kaio (1-4) losing to Dejima
-------------------------------
(Another day, another loss)
"I am not moving forward at all. I can't step in hard
with my foot and I can't really put pressure against
my opponent."
(Showing a sign of pain at the end)
"Oh, it was just a little bit of pain rushing through
my left thigh."
"No, no. I am not planning to go talk to the shisho
tonight. I am just going to get my leg checked over
now."
Kotooshu (4-1) over Kakuryu by yorikiri, 3.6 seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------
"I had a good tachiai today."
(On doing so well this basho)
"C'mon, it's only the fifth day."
Chiyotaikai (4-1) losing to Ama by uwate-dashinage,
2.3 seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Admiring Ama's smart sumo)
"I saw he was standing almost at the edge. I knew it
was risky to go for a yori when we were more or less
in a yotsu position but I went in knowing he might
come with a throw."
(Again the winning streak stopped at four to start the
basho)
"Yeah, right, it's the same deja vu thing, isn't it?"
(Even though his record against Ama was 6 wins and 1
loss.)
"I was aware he wasn't going to be easy as all my wins
were by slapdown. I should have gone with more urgency
and intensity."
(On hearing Kaio receiving a medical treatment)
"Well you know I am getting an IV every morning and
night too. I guess the ozeki group is all having a
physical breakdown of one kind or another."
Ama (3-2) over Chiyotaikai
---------------------------------
(Receiving a cold stare from Chiyotaikai at the
shikiri)
"Actually I got so scared that I avoided looking at
him and turned my head sideway."
"He came in with Tsauppari so I got the mawashi
easily."
(Finished with 7 win and 8 loss record last basho but
so far 3 win and 2 loss finishing against
ozeki-yokozuna group)
"I was feeling great last basho. But I kept counting
wins and losses. You know people started talking about
ozeki this and that. But that was a great learning
experience."
"In the new heya building, Aminishiki and I, we both
have our own rooms, you know. He is doing so well, so
it really gives me more motivation too."
"It's a great confidence builder when I can win
against the top rank rikishi. So far not bad at all."
"But I am all happy when the fans who came to see us
go back home happy."
Hakuho (4-1) over Hokutoriki by uwatenage, 3.2 seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------
(Going through intense shikiri against Hokutoriki and
Hokutoriki taking advantage in the tachiai jump)
"Oh yeah. I figured I'd follow a good manner and let
him come in to me first."
(Finishing the first third with only one loss, trying
to fulfill his responsibility as lone yokozuna)
"I guess it's a sign that I am feeling more
confident."
(On having Yokozuna Deliberation Committee members
"observing" the bouts today)
"It really does not bother me at all."
++++++++++++++
Takasago oyakata
---------------------
(Receiving a report that Asashoryu visited a hotspring
treatment center again today)
"He went back there again. I believe he would be going
there for at least a week more. For the next little
while he should be getting the treatment there daily."
"I saw him on TV today, going into the treatment
place. He looked good. I imagine his mental condition
must have improved considerably for him to step
outside once again."
Makiko Uchidate, Yokozuna Deliberation Committee
member
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(While prefacing her comment on Asashoryu as strictly
personal and not that of the YDC)
"He should take the responsibility of his action and
resign from his position as he has abandon his
employment duty from a corporation run for public
good. When one takes in consideration of all the
circumstances, in any other industry he would have
been dismissed already. As a man, I'd rather want him
to build his own Hanamichi with grace and class."
Katsuji Ebisawa, Yokozuna Deliberation Committee
chairman
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"He has violated a rule of the Sumo Kyokai. Once he is
back here in Tokyo, I'd like him to review his action
humbly and learn from it responsively. I want him to
repay the consideration given to him by training
harder. Meanwhile our committee will be observing his
conduct and action."
