Yoshikaze (1-1) over Kitazakura by oshidashi, 15.1
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(After pushing Kitazakura out of the dohyo with
oshi-dashi, Yoshikaze was surprised by Kitazakura as
he came back on the dohyo)
"When I was ready to bow at the end, I could hear
Kitazakura-zeki's voice, 'Thank you', he said to me.
It's really scary to know that that he has that much
power when he is 35 years old."

Tochiozan (2-0) over Goeido by oshidashi, 4.6 seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------
(Prevailing over his rival from elementary, middle and
high school days. Joining at the same 2005 Hatsu
basho, Goeido won the previous two encounters in
Jonokuchi and Jonidan as well as having won more bouts
in their amateur sumo competitions)
"He is the opponent I hate to lose more than anyone
else. I've lost two straight to him since joining so
it was beginning to bother me. So I am really happy
today."
"I tried not to get him inside of me. I think I had a
good flow today."
"You know after the bout my hands were still shaking."

Goeido (1-1) losing to Tochiozan
--------------------------------------
(Being overwhelmed by his rival)
"I tried to watch out for his Moro-zahi... But it's
good to face him again in Makuuchi. I want to beat him
the next time around."

Takamisakari (1-1) losing to Kasugo by kotenage, 18.4
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The thing I can't stand is that I was in my favorite
Migi-yotsu form and still lost. I guess I got myself
too much into a yotsu and I didn't have more weight.
But I can't stand it at all as I am moving so well
now. I wasted the bout today."

Takekaze (2-0) over Roho by oshidashi, 3.0 seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------
"Yesterday as well as today, all I want to do is to
move forward and forward. I have nothing to waver
for."

Toyohibiki (1-1) over Tamanoshima by oshidashi, 6.0
seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I just wanted to hit him with everything I had. You
know if I got myself into a yotsu, it's the game all
over."

Kaiho (2-0) over Miyabiyama by tsukiotoshi, 13.1
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(34 years old but showing a vitality of rikishi 10
years younger)
"I guess I am moving so well because I don't need to
be tense. After all I don't crave anything more than
what I have."

Miyabiyama (1-1) losing to Kaiho
--------------------------------------
"He kept me constantly in defensive with his Inashi.
It was just a bad timing at the end when my feet
happened to line up."

Kotoshogiku (2-0) over Wakanosato by yorikiri, 3.5
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"The last basho I lost to him in a long bout by
Hidari-yotsu. So this time around I got my arms
squeeze tight to my body so he wouldn't get his arms
into my mawashi. I feel I remained patient enough to
stay in with all his pulls."
(On his senior heya mate, Kotomitsuki)
"I've been training with him every day. He has such
hard head that after about five sessions or so, my
head is just about ready to explode."

Asasekiryu (1-1) losing to Kakuryu by oshidashi, 2.4
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"I ended up pulling him....I thought he would come all
out with Tsuppari. I didn't expect him to come down
with his head so low."

Aminishiki (2-0) over Hokutoriki by tsukiotoshi, 0.7
second
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(Taking care of his nemesis Hokutoriki in an instant)
"I could never have a good tachiai against him. I just
can't match his tachiai timing. I never thought of
moving to the left. It was just a quick reaction.
Anyway whatever way I get a win against him, I will be
happy."
"I was able to respond so quickly. I guess I should be
thankful for having Ama around to train with."

Chiyotaikai (2-0) over Tochinonada by tsukidashi, 3.5
seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Spirited efforts against veteran Tochinonada)
"It was an excellent sumo. I hit him then I got inside
of him so quickly. Then I just pushed him off. It was
amazing. I guess this was the youthful vitality
winning over."

Tochinonada (0-2) losing to Chiyotaikai
---------------------------------------------
(Since the 2005 Natsu basho, has been overwhelmed by
Chiyotaikai)
"If I go with my head low, I start thinking he would
pull me down. I let myself stay all in defensive, only
offering meek resistance. Not exactly a winning
formula."

Kotomitsuki (2-0) over Homasho by yorikiri, 2.3
seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------
(Stopped by Homasho's Matta the first time out but
still went out forcefully pushing him)
"For an instant I thought I' d change my strategy and
go right on with my head but I decided to stick with
what I decided originally."
"I was able to do exactly what I expected of myself
today. Actually more than I expected. I feel I am
moving really well now."
(Known for his timidness, often called "chickenheart'
or worse)
"You know by winning the day 1 yesterday, I thought
things would get much easier. You know what? They
don't. Not at all."
(About this basho compared to the last when he was
going all out for ozeki promotion)
"To be honest it is much easier. But I never want to
go through that again."
(On the old Sadogatake oyakata)
"I still cannot believe he is gone..."

Sadogatake oyakata (former sekiwake Kotonowaka)
--------------------------------------------------------------
(On Kotomitsuki)
"In our training room, we have a picture of the old
shisho. I believe Kotomitsuki trained so hard prior to
this basho, especially for him."

Kisenosato (1-1) over Kaio by yorikiri, 22.8 seconds
------------------------------------------------------------
(A sour taste in mouth, beating Kaio with a henka
move)
"It wasn't as if I was wavering at the tachiai or
anything but I didn't have a good tachiai at all. But
I expected he would come out stepping on much
harder... Othewise I was able to keep myself calm."

Kaio (0-2) losing to Kisenosato
-----------------------------------
(Coming out of kyujo feeling sluggish, losing two
consecutive bouts and showing no sign of life)
"It's like I can't seem to get going with vigor. Like
I am not moving at all."
(On taking out the supporter around his injured left
thigh today)
"Well you know I figured there was no point in
worrying about it any more. I lost today and it really
doesn't do anything even if I keep thinking about it
all night."

Kotooshu (2-0) over Ama by yorikiri, 4.3 seconds
----------------------------------------------------------
(Appeared to push out Ama in a flash and the gunbai
went for him but there was a doubt of his
'Isami-ashi', eventually overruled after the mono-ii)
"I didn't even realized it at all. I think the good
point was that I kept moving forward. Compared to the
last basho I am trying to get myself keep moving
forward constantly."

Hakuho (1-1) over Tokitenku by yorikiri, 2.6 seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------
(Still feeling the pressure but not repeating the same
mistake)
"Well I had to learn from the yesterday you know. I
have to take initiatives and then go after him, not
letting him take the control. The error was not doing
that yesterday. Today I was in control. I had a good
tachiai. I got the right mawashi. Then I was able to
go after him till the end. I hope to show a sumo like
today all the way till the end."
