A day before every Tokyo basho, the two yusho winners of the previous two basho stand outside the KKan in the courtyard and participate in a small ceremony standing next to their yusho portraits, which then get hoisted to the KKan roof.
Small problem this time, right? One of the players was unable to attend.
Takasago Oyakata replaced the missing link today. He was a bit nervous but
"Hakuhou went first, so I saw the process and copied it, so that
helped..', he said. There were about 30 people from the press and
another 100 people watching in the courtyard.
Now,
a short quiz: When was the last time an Oyakata stood in for his
rikishi for the portrait ceremony? No Japanese reading ability person
may apply.
Kotomitsuki says he's ready. He did some light training with the Young
Ones at the stable, mostly honing his tachiai. "During honbasho I'm
thinking about it day and night, so before it all starts, I intend to
relax..", he said, but added: "The first half is the deepest
most important. I hope to 'ride' it", he crooned. He will be having
some new daily kensho put on his bouts by a company from his hometown,
the Meihou Group. "We will do our small part and support our hometown
Ozeki. If we can be some sort of stimulant, we would be very happy!!",
declared a person from the company.
Kotomitsuki went with the shisho
and others to watch a ball game at the Tokyo dome last night as well,
to take their minds off the coming basho.
